Ask a Leadership Coach
Wanting to Start the New Year Strong
Victoria Baylor, Leadership & Org. Development Coach, Consultant,
Speaker
Question: I feel like I’ve
had a pretty productive year.
I didn’t get the promotion
I wanted but I feel like I’m
showing myself to be a lead
er, and am constantly tak
ing on new responsibilities
to show my competence.
Yes, I have some areas to
improve on but my annual
review shows I’m making
improvements. I’m hoping
all of my hard work will pay
off next year and I will reach
the goals I’ve set. But I can’t
help but feel a little anxious.
What if I fail? ~ Terry
Coaching: Terry, I first want
to commend you for putting
in such hard work this year.
Being intentional and ac
countable are the hallmarks
of a leader. None of us have
the power to control the fu
ture. But you can prepare
diligently for it. Zig Ziglar
*
said, “Success occurs when
opportunity meets prepara
tion’’. It sounds like you are
definitely moving forward
in a productive way. The
question is “what else can
you do to prepare and move
closer to your goals’’? Here
are a few things to consider.
Self-awareness is key for
every professional so feed
back is one of your great
est tools. People other than
yourself can often see what
you’re missing—the good
and the bad. Consider gain
ing feedback in these ways.
1. Having a mentor is a great
way to get valuable feed
back and direction. 2. Ask
colleagues and friends about
your strengths and weak
nesses to use and watch out
for, respectively. Work with
a coach to develop an action
plan from what you learn.
Wishing you a strong start
in 202V.

United Way Of The Coastal Empire Thanks Past Board & Campaign Chairs
United Way of the
Coastal Empire recently
celebrated past leaders who
served the organization as
Board Chairs or Campaign

the Olde Pink House.
Current Board
Chair Mark Bennett hosted
this inaugural event to thank
these business and commu
nity leaders for their valu
able service to the people of
the region through the work
of United Way. Many still
serve the organization by
dedicating time and talent
on various committees.
The first-time
event drew many United
Way leaders with famil
iar names in this region,
including Carol Bell, Ira
Berman, Joe Buck, Dale
Critz, Jr., Helen Downing,
Steve Eagle, Terry Enoch,
Brian Foster, Jenny Gentry,
Bill Haile, Jeff Kole, Toby
Moreau, Jeff, O’Connor,
Steve Pound, Jerry Rainey,
Swann Seiler, Larry Sil-
bermann, Michael Traynor,
Cecilia Russo Turner, Rick

“United Way of
the Coastal Empire was
founded by leaders of this
community for the benefit of
this community more than
80 years ago. And year af

since then, men and women
like those in this room built
and sustained this organiza
tion and this important work
to improve lives right here
at home,’’ said United Way
President and CEO Brynn
Grant as she addressed the
room. “It is humbling to be
here with so many leaders
who have served this com

ways.’’
“The Coastal Em
pire should be very proud
of our United Way,’’ said
past Campaign and Board

decades, this outstanding
team effort has consistently
provided the most effective
and efficient way of helping
those less fortunate in our
community. It’s local people
