Savannah State Athletes Earn

dent-athletes earn college
degrees during the 201st Sa
vannah State University Com
mencement which took place
December 9 at Theodore A.
Wright Stadium.
Over 40% of those
student-athletes earned their
Venus Ubeibi
degrees with honors. Topping
that list was golfer Korbin
Allan who earned his bache
lor’s in biology, Summa Cum
Laude.
Five student-athletes
graduated Magna Cum Laude:

ketball (Accounting); Venus
Ubeibi, women’s tennis (Ac
counting); Jayden Simpkins,
football (Middle Grades Edu
cation); Jonathan Mock, foot
ball (Homeland Security and
Emergency Management); and
Morgan Green, softball (Biolo
gy)-

list were seven student-athletes
who graduated Cum Laude:

ball (History); Joseph Smith,
baseball (History); Jahvene
Whalder, women’s track and
held (Visual and Performing
Arts); Bria Bembery, wom

Albany State Hires
New Football
Coach
Quinn Gray, Sr.
Albany State Univer
sity has named Quinn Gray, Sr.
as the 14th head football coach
for the Golden Rams.
Gray replaces Gabe
Giardina who was named
the head football coach at
Charleston Southern in late
November. During his five-
year tenure, Giardina achieved
an overall record of 37-17. He
led the Rams to become the
2021 SIAC Champions and an
NCAA Division II playoff ap
pearance
Gray currently serves
as the senior offensive analyst
at the University of Memphis.
Prior to his tenure at Memphis,
Gray served as the quarter
back’s coach at Alcorn State
University from 2020-2022.
He also served as the associate
head coach, offensive coordi
nator, and quarterbacks coach
at Florida A&M University
(FAMU) from 2011-2014 and
spent three seasons as head
coach at Lincoln High School
in Florida, producing nine
Florida Athletic Coaches As
sociation (FACA) All-District
Players, including the 2019
Tallahassee Quarterback Club
Offensive Player of the Year,
Special Teams Player of the
Year, and Academic Player of
the Year.

Gray had a distin
guished career as a profession
al football player. He played
six seasons as a quarterback in
the National Football League
for the Jacksonville Jaguars
and Kansas City Chiefs and
also played for the New York
Sentinels in the United Foot
ball League. In addition, Gray
played for the Frankfurt Gal
axy, whom he led to the 2003
World Bowl Championship in
the NFL Europe League.
As a student-athlete
at FAMU, Gray became the
all-time leader in passing yards
(7,378), pass attempts (1,113),
pass completions (562), and
touchdown passes (57). He
holds the single-game record
for most pass attempts (65 vs.
North Carolina A&T in ‘01).
In 2020, Gray was
inducted into the Mid-East
ern Athletic Conference Hall
of Fame for his outstanding
accomplishments as the quar
terback at FAMU from 1997-
2001. In 2020, he was inducted
into the FAMU Sports Hall of
Fame.
Gray is a native of
Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and
holds a Bachelor of Science de
gree in Health and Physical Ed
ucation (‘06) from FAMU. He
is married to Shemeka Gray,
and they have six children,
Quine, Destiny, David, Quinn
Jr., Ashton, and Londyn.
Newbill Transfers To North Alabama
Savannah State all
conference defensive lineman
Makenly Newbill will play his
final season of college football
on the Division I level at North
Alabama as a graduate transfer
for the Lions.
The Rincon native
stated his college career at Val
dosta State before transferring
to SSU.
During the 2022
season where Savannah State
posted a 5-5 record, Newbill
had 40 tackles, five tackles for
losses, four sacks and three
pass breakups which was good
enough to earn him Second
Team All-SIAC honors.
Newbill also garnered
Second Team All-SIAC hon
ors during the 2021 campaign
when he helped the Tigers to a
8-2 record. That season he reg
istered 19 tackles, nine tackles
for losses, five quarterback
hurries and four sacks.
Newbill earned his

undergraduate degree in crim
inal justice from SSU in De
cember 2022.
North Alabama had
a 1-10 record during the 2022
season and went winless (0-
5) in their ASUN conference
games.
A Seat at “The Table”
As part of our com
munity outreach, we strive to
make the Hawk Enrichment
Center, 107 Martin Luther
King Jr. Drive as communi
ty friendly as possibly to help
meet the needs of youth and
their families in our commu
nity. Outreach is an important
practice to help us work toward
the goals we envision for the
Hawk Enrichment Center.
I am proud to an
nounce that we are introducing
“The Table’’. This is a unit that
we have been working on for
the past few months to use as a
site to ensure that youth in our
community are served meals
afterschool. Beginning Janu
ary 10th, from 4:30pm until
5:30pm any youth in our com
munity will be served a meal.
I would like to invite
you to help us get the new pro
gram off to a good start.

about the how the new pro
gram works.
