Parade To Be Held
2023 Sigma Education Scholarship and
Awards Gala
The Observance Day
Association, Inc. will present
its 43rd annual Rev. Dr. Mar
tin Luther King, Jr. Parade on
January 16, 2023, beginning at
10:00 A.M.
We expect more than
300 entries to take to the streets
including bands, civic and so
cial organizations, JROTC
units, businesses, and others
who want to join in honoring
the life and works of Dr. King
on the holiday named for him.

tion or to watch the parade . We

GSO Holds Passing of The Gavel Ceremony
On December 10,
2022, at the final chapter
meeting of the Gamma Sigma
Omega Chapter of Alpha Kap
pa Alpha Sorority, Incorpo
rated®, the gavel was passed
from the outgoing president,
Charlene Jones, to the incom
ing president, Nicole Fields.
The members then held a re
ception in honor of the outgo
ing president. This recognition
event was filled with words of
encouragement, goodwill, and
laughter as several members
reflected on their interactions
with President Jones, who ful
filled her two year term (2021-
2022) with dutiful service.
“Leading during the
pandemic was not the best
situation, but Gamma Sig
ma Omega Chapter still had a
strong presence in the commu
nity as we served significantly
and with an impact”, President
Jones stated. She also conclud
ed that Gamma Sigma Omega
will be in good hands as she
passes the gavel to incoming
president, Nicole Fields.

Sigma Education Scholarship
and Awards Gala on January
8, 2023, at the Beach Insti
tute. The event was hosted by
Savannah State University Di
rector of Admissions, Brian
Dawsey.
President of the Sig
ma Education Foundation
Moncello Stewart awarded
members of the community
who have made a significant
impact in the areas of the busi
ness community, social action,
and education. Vernon Dono
van of State Farm was awarded
the Bigger and Better Business
Award for his contributions to
the greater Savannah area. For
Social Action, popular savan
nah activist Jennifer Graham
was honored for her philan
thropic spirit with Shelter From
the Rain. For the final civic
award, 21st Century leader
Tanis Hall, was honored as the
Education Award Recipient.
The foundation honored busi
nessman Ben Polote Sr. with
its lifetime achievement award
for the work done building the
Polote Corporation.
President of the Tau
Beta Sigma Chapter, Deion
Williams presented awards to
members of the Tau Beta Sig
ma Chapter for their contribu
tions to Phi Beta Sigma Frater
nity, Inc and to the Savannah
Area. The community service
award was awarded to Keron
Herndon. The Unsung Hero
Award went to Quincy White-
head. The final award, Sigma
of the Year, was awarded to
Ralph Brown
The Sigma Educa
tion Foundation was founded
in 2018 and is a 501c3 whose
purpose is to raise money for
scholarships for seniors gradu
ating high school in the greater
savannah area.

ternity is a historically Afri
can American Greek-lettered
fraternity that was founded at
Howard University in Wash
ington, D.C., January 9, 2014,
by the Honorable A. Langston
Taylor, Honorable Leonard F.
Morse, and Honorable Charles
I. Brown. The founders want
ed to formulate an organization
that would exemplify the ideals
of brotherhood, scholarship,
and service. The Tau Beta
Sigma Chapter was founded
in 1933 in Savannah, Georgia.
The fraternity’s motto is “Cul
ture for Service and Service for

Savannah Traffick Jam 2023
Savannah Traffick
Jam 2023 is an annual event
that is hosted by the Savannah
Interagency Diversity Council
(SIDC) to bring awareness of
human trafficking. The Traffick
Jam will be held at Savannah
State University on Friday, Jan
uary 27 and Saturday, January
28,2023.
On Friday, January
27, 2023 from 8 AM - 12 PM
there will be a Law Enforce
ment Workshop in Savannah
State’s Howard Jordan Audi
torium. This event is free and
open to the public. On Satur
day, January 28, 2023 from 9
AM - 4:30 PM the 2023 Savan
nah Traffick Jam will be held
in Savannah State’s Student
Union and open to the general
public for free.
The event will feature
a resource fair that will consist
of over 40 local non-profit or
ganizations as vendors. Savan
nah Traffick Jam 2023 will fea
ture expert speakers who will
be provide their experiences,
knowledge and expertise on
human trafficking to the attend
ees. The Master of Ceremony
will be Dawn Baker, News An
chor and Author, WTOC-TV.
