McGriff Returns
To Auburn
Wesley McGriff
Ole Miss (2017-18), Auburn
(2019-20), Florida (2021) and
Louisville (2021). For three
years he coached in the pro
ranks with the New Orleans
Saints (2013-15).
The Tifton, Georgia
native received his bachelor’s
degree from SSU while grad
uating cum laude in 1990 and
earned a master’s in public
administration from Georgia
Southern in 1993. McGriff
was commissioned as a second
lieutenant in the U.S. Army in
1990 and was a member of the
Army Reserves until 2001.

Albany State sliced
their deficit to one (24-23) with
7:18 remaining in the second
quarter before SSU responded
with all-2 spurt to push their
lead to 35-25. Savannah State
led 45-32 at the half.
The Rams outscored
SSU 13-10 in the third quarter
but the Lady Tigers used a 10-2
fourth quarter run to increase
their advantage to 71-56 with
2:49 left in the game.
Bria Gibbs chipped in
13 points for SSU as they im
proved to 11-3 overall and 8-2
in the SIAC.
Savannah State Tops Rams But Falls
To Morehouse

The Savannah State
men’s basketball team re
mained perfect at home with a
55-44 win over Albany State in
a game played at Tiger Arena
on January 9.
The Rams jumped out
to a 8-2 lead but SSU respond
ed to go ahead 23-10 after a
16-2 run. The Tigers closed the
half with a 9-3 run to take a 16
point lead into intermission.
SSU built an 18-point
lead in the second half but Al
bany State could get no closer
than nine. Eleik Bowles was
the only Tiger in double fig
ures with 15 points while his
twin brother Elavian notched a
team-high eight rebounds.
Elavian Bowles
scored a game-high 22 points
but it would not be enough
as Savannah State dropped a
63-60 decision to Morehouse
in a game played on Jan. 14
at Forbes Arena on the More
house campus.
Savannah State
trailed by 11 with 14 minutes
remaining in the contest but re
sponded with a 17-3 run to go
ahead 49-46 with 8:19 on the
clock.
A jumper by Cam
eron Edwards gave the Tigers
a 54-52 advantage at the 4:53
mark but Morehouse answered
with a 10-2 spurt to take a 62-
56 lead with 1:36 left. A pair
of free throws by Bowles got
SSU as close as 62-60 in the
final 22 seconds.
The first half was
close for the most part. More
house led by four with just
over four minutes left but fin
ished the half with a 10-3 run
that gave them a 37-26 half
time edge.
Ayjay Plain added
12 points and seven steals for
SSU while Eleik Bowles had
a team-high seven rebounds.
The loss drops the Tigers to 9-5
overall and 7-3 in the SIAC.

Elavian Bowles
Congratulations are
in order for Marcus Scott who
recently scored the 1,000th
point of his collegiate basket
ball career on January 7, 2023
when he and his teammates at
central State defeated Spring
Hill 72-71.
Scott, who entered
the game needing four points
to reach 1000 career points, hit
the milestone after a made free
throw at the 16:19 mark of the
first half. Scott’s accomplish
ments were recognized during
the ensuing media timeout
where he was presented with
the game ball by President Dr.
Jack Thomas, Head Coach An
tonio Davis, and Interim Direc
tor of Athletic Nicole Pluger.
Scott spent three sea
sons at Savannah State before
transferring to Central State.
While at SSU, he
scored 806 career points. He
scored 394 points during the
2019-20 season and 33 points
during the COVID shortened
season of 2020-21. During the
2021-22 campaign he scored
379 points which gave him
806.
After earning his
undergraduate degree from
Savannah State, Scott entered
the transfer portal and landed
at Central State as a graduate
transfer.
Auburn head foot
ball coach Hugh Freeze has
announced the hiring for Wes
ley McGriff as the Tigers de
fensive backs coach. McGriff,
who served as an assistant
coach at Auburn in 2016 and
again in 2019-20, was the sec
ondary coach at Louisville this
past season.
McGriff started at
linebacker for Savannah State
from 1987-89 and was named
the conference’s 1989 Male
Academic Athlete of the Year.
He began his coaching career
at SSU (1990-94). Starting as
a graduate assistant, McGriff
tutored running backs before
coaching the secondary in
1991 and later serving as de
fensive coordinator and inter
im head coach.
Since leaving Savan
nah State, his coaching career
has taken him to stops on the
collegiate level which includes
Kentucky State (1995-99),
Eastern Kentucky (2000),
Kentucky (2001-02), Baylor
(2003-06), Miami, Fla. (2007-
10), Vanderbilt (2011), Ole
Miss (2012), Auburn (2016),
Amari Heard and
Ta’Quasia Lampkin both had
double-doubles to lead the
Savannah State women’s bas
ketball team to a 76-64 win
over rival Albany State in a
game played in Tiger Arena on
January 9. Heard had a game-
high 20 points and 14 rebounds
while Lampkin added 14 points
and 11 rebounds.
As a team, the Lady
Tigers shot 46.7 percent from
the held and out-rebounded Al
bany State 49 to 31.
SSU scored the first
ten points for the game and
built a 13-2 lead with 4:20 left
in the first quarter before Alba

invitational track & held meet
at Savannah State University’s
T.A. Wright Stadium. Track
teams and unattached athletes
from the southeast and as far
away as New Jersey have par
ticipated in past events.
This year will be the
hrst year that the team will host
the event since the transition of
Coach Jinks this past Septem
ber. During the midday, Sil
ver Cheetah parents, coaches,
Cheetah alumni, County offi
cials, AAU officials and SSU
staff will pause the competition
to celebrate Coach Jinks’ lega
cy that spanned over 50 years.
Track & Field was
a passion of Coach Jinks
throughout his athletic career.
After retiring as Athletic Di
rector from the Board of Ed
ucation, he started his Silver
Cheetah track club in order to
give Savannah athletes more
exposure to track & held at an
elite level. The Silver Chee
tahs have competed in Geor
gia, Louisiana, Iowa, Texas,
Michigan, Illinois, Virginia,
Florida, and Tennessee since
1990. Several Silver Cheetah
athletes have earned full ath-
