SSU Opens Indoor
Track Season

The Savannah State
indoor track teams opened their
2023 season with a trip to Bir
mingham, Alabama on January
21-22. SSU participated in the
Samford January Open on Jan.
21 and in the KMS Invitational
the following day. Both events
were held at the Birmingham
Metro Cross Plex.
Sadrea Mabry won
the women’s long jump at the
Samford Open and claimed
second in the triple jump.
Da’Aliyah Johnson was second
in the long jump while Ravyn
Cystrunk was fifth in the 400m
and Kennedy Spears was sev
enth in the high jump. For the
SSU men, Winfred Porter was

fourth in the 60m run and fOth
in the 200m race. Nyzaeveon
Thompson finished ninth in the
60m hurdles. In the high jump,
Aidan Holliman was second,
Cameron Edwards was seventh
and Daeshaun Logan finished
10th.

tional, Mabry won the triple

jump and was ninth in the long
jump. Spears finished sixth in
the triple jump. Cystrunk was
fourth in the 200m race, Kay
la Chance finished third in the
800m and was fourth in the
one mile, Jeainna Bryant was
seventh in the 60m hurdles
while Spears was second in the
high jump and A’mijya Dudley
was ninth in the high jump. In
the men’s high jump, Edwards
and Holliman finished tied for
second. Edwards was third in
the triple jump while Dwayne
Chenault finished fifth. Porter
was sixth in the 60m race, Alex
Loyd was seventh in the 400m,
Solomon Mitchell was ninth in
the long jump and Yastremski
Johnson was ninth in the 200m
race.

Savannah State out-
scored Edward Waters 25-13 in
the opening quarter and went
on to post a 73-62 win over a
scrappy bunch from the Jack
sonville, Florida based school
in a game played on January
21 in Tiger Arena.
" SSU (12-4, 8-3
SIAC) led by as many as 17
in the second quarter before
Edward Waters rallied to slice
their deficit to just two points,
leading 64-62 with 2:53 re
maining, Savannah State fin
ished the game with nine un
answered points to get the win.
Bria Gibbs and Mia Goolsby
each scored 19 points for SSU
while Jacksonville native Nyla
Allen added 16 points. Jashi-
yah Jones came off the bench
to grab a career and game high
13 rebounds in the win.
The Lady Tigers
were upset in overtime by
Clark Atlanta on Jan. 16 in a
game played at Epps Arena by
Mia Goolsby
a score of 70-63.
SSU led 13-12 after
one quarter of play and held a
slim 25-24 lead at the half. Sa
vannah State led by as many as
11 in the third quarter as they
entered the fourth quarter with
a 45-39 cushion. CAU won
the fourth quarter battle 20-
14 which forced overtime tied
at 59. The Panthers outscored
SSU 11-4 in the extra period to
earn the win.
Gibbs had 17 points
for Savannah State while Am-
ari Heard scored 11 and Al
len chipped in 10. Ta’Quasia
Lampkin had 13 rebounds.

men’s basketball team rallied
from a 19-point deficit and de
feated Edward Waters 80-78 in
a game played at Tiger Arena
on January 21.
SSU trailed 21-19
with 10:44 left in the first half
but Edward Waters went on a
19-2 run to increase their lead
to 40-21 at the 5:49 mark. Sa
vannah State finished the re
mainder of the period strong
with a 11-1 spurt and trailed
41-32 at intermission.
Savannah State found
themselves down by 16 with
13:45 left but then woke up and
strung together a 29-5 run to
take a 73-65 lead with 5:48 re
maining. EWU got within one
with 28 seconds left but a free
throw by Eleik Bowles sealed
the win as the team improved
to 11-5 overall and 9-3 in the
SIAC.
Bowles pumped in 30
points for the Tigers while An
drew Okorodudu came off the
bench to spark the team with
20 points and 13 rebounds.
On Jan. 16, the Tigers
used all-2 rally midway in the
second half to defeat Clark At-

lanta 62-55 in a game played
in Atlanta. SSU led 29-28
at the half and the game was
close until the Tigers turned a
43-41 lead into a 54-43 advan
tage with 7:40 left. The Pan
thers never got closer than six
the rest of the way.
Bowles had 35
points for Savannah State
while Ayjay Plain added 10
and Okorodudu had seven re
bounds.
SSU Adds To Men’s Basketball Staff

men’s basketball coach Horace
Broadnax has added two new
pieces to his coaching staff.
Just before the Christmas hol
idays, Broadnax added Dancial
Jackson as an assistant and
Ta’Kyla Austin as a graduate
assistant.
The pair will fill the
void left by longtime assistant
Clyde Wormley who decided
to pursue other interest outside
of basketball. Wormley was
part of Broadnax’s staff since
2007 and helped guide the
team to a pair of Mid-Eastern
Athletic Conference regular
season championships in 2011-
12 and 2017-18 and a Southern
Intercollegiate Athletic Confer
ence tournament championship
in the 2021-22 campaign.
Jackson is a Savan
nah native who has been an
assistant coach at Windsor For
est High School the past nine
years, helping the Knights to
four consecutive region cham
pionship appearances with
back-to-back region titles in
2019 and 2020, four consec
utive state playoff appearanc
es reaching the Final Four in
Ta’Kyla Austin
2019, 2021, and concluding
with a state championship ap
pearance in 2022.
Jackson graduated
from the Atlanta Institute of
Music in 2005 and is current
ly working on a Master’s of
Business Administration de
gree at Savannah State.
Austin is a 2022
graduate of SSU and is cur
rently enrolled in the universi
ty’s graduate program.
A native of Fort
Lauderdale, Florida, Austin
began her collegiate career at
the University of North Flor
ida. She spent her sophomore
season at ASA College Miami
before finishing her playing
career at SSU. Austin played
three years for the Lady Tigers
and finished her SSU career
with 60 games, 227 rebounds,
121 assists, 82 steals and 621
points.
Austin’s best games
as a player at SSU came during
the 2019-20 season. She had
career-highs against Paine (24
points), Lane (nine rebounds),
Central State (six assists) and
Albany State (four steals).
