Parker’s Restores Iconic Globe at
White Bluff and DeRenne
Special to the Savannah Tribune
When Parker’s
founder and CEO Greg Parker
purchased the 3.4-acre com
mercial site at the corner of
White Bluff Road and Derenne
Avenue in 2021, he could have
demolished the iconic globe
that has stood on the site since
1955 to make room for a new
Parker’s Kitchen, Chick-fil-A
and Starbucks.
Instead, he decided
to restore the 60-foot globe
and to incorporate this quirky
Savannah landmark into the
site design. The globe, which
weighs more than 500,000
pounds, had fallen into dis
repair over the years and was
recently repainted by the orig
inal muralist Eric Henn, who
first painted the structure in
1999. Parker’s invested more
than $100,000 to preserve the
globe for future generations of
Savannah residents, from con
ducting engineering studies to
repainting the steel structure
and topping it with a special
UV protectant that is also graf
fiti-resistant.
“We’re thrilled to be
able to take this eyesore that
was a gateway entrance to Sa
vannah and create something
we could all be proud of,’’ said
Parker. “The response from
local residents has been over
whelmingly positive.’’
City of Savannah 4th
District Alderman Nick Pa
lumbo, who has been a strong
local advocate of preserving
the globe, celebrated the resto
ration of this local landmark.
“This Savannah icon
is being celebrated in a way
that Savannahians will be able
to enjoy for generations,’’ he
said. “It’s wonderful to part
ner with an organization like
Parker’s that recognizes these
historical Savannah landmarks.
I’m so proud and honored that
they’ve utilized the globe as a
feature of this new site.’’
The globe was origi
nally constructed in the 1950s
by Savannah Gas Co. as an
emergency holding station for
natural gas. It’s one of only
a handful of remaining steel
structures in the United States.
The globe was re
cently repainted with more in
tense colors, but it maintains
the original design, with a few
slight modifications, including
adding the signature Parker’s
sun symbol to mark Savannah
on the map.
When Henn origi
nally painted the giant globe
in 1999, he added Hurricane
Floyd to the design, but the
storm was spinning the wrong
way. This time around, he cor
rected the error, adding Hurri
cane Fran offshore, spinning
the correct way.
“The hurricane was a
very funny thing I’ll never for
get,’’ Henn explained. “Even
though I knew what direction it
turned, the way I painted it was
wrong. So, this time, I double
and triple checked. I see the
pride here in Savannah. This
tank could’ve been discarded,
but it was opted to restore it be
cause it was a landmark. And
it’s an honor to be able to work
on this landmark.’’
The new Parker’s
Kitchen is currently open for
business, and the globe mural
was completed in late January.
Chick-fil-A is expected to open
in February, with Starbucks
following in May.
“On behalf of the
entire Parker’s family, we are
so proud to get the globe re
painted,’’ said Parker. “It’s very
exciting. We hope generations
of Savannah residents will con
tinue to enjoy this iconic land
mark.
