Savannah Mayor Van Johnson Officially Launches 2023
Re-Election Bid

son, II officially
launched his 2023 Re-Election
bid on Monday, February 20,
2023 at the Forsyth Park Band-
shell.
Mayor Johnson, rec
ognized as one of Georgia
Trend’s 100 Most Influential
Georgians for three consecu
tive years, currently serves as
the 67th mayor of Savannah,
GA.
Mayor Johnson is
credited with successfully
leading Savannah through the
unprecedented COVID-19 cri
sis and consistently remained
a reliable source of advocacy
and information for residents
and local small businesses.
Johnson fulfilled his campaign
promises of making the City
government more transparent
and accessible, hosting over
150 press conferences and 152
“Friday Night Live” weekly so
cial media engagement events.
Johnson led the Savannah City
Council in raising the mini
mum wage for City employees
to $15 per hour; entry pay for
police officers and firefighters
to $50,000 and $48,000 a year,
respectively. Mayor Johnson
led the adoption of Georgia’s
most aggressive climate ac
tion plan, 100% Savannah, the
most significant investment in
affordable housing and home
lessness reduction in City’s his
tory and the lowest millage rate
in 35 years. He also oversaw
the completion of the EnMar-
ket Arena and numerous capital
projects, including the Floyd
Adams Municipal Complex,
the John S. Delaware Center,
the Waters Avenue Streetscape
project, and other projects near
completion.

The induction ceremony to
take place March 15 in Atlan
ta. Tina Tyus Shaw anchors the
WSAV newscasts weeknights.
Tina shared this honor with
viewers in December during
WSAV News 3 at Six.
Tina Tyus-Shaw, a
Griffin, Georgia native and
Tennessee State University
graduate, has been a fixture on
WSAV since 1992. “I am so
appreciative of WSAV, Nex-
star broadcasting for allowing
me to be a part of your lives
for more than 30 years.” Over
that time, she has been hon
ored with dozens of awards

for broadcasting excellence
including a National Murrow
Award for Best Newscast. One
of her proudest accomplish
ments, the implementation of
the Buddy Check 3 program
on WSAV. It’s a Breast Cancer
Mammogram initiative that has
been credited with saving the
lives of multiple local cancer
survivors thanks to early detec
tion. “As I reflect on my years
of work in television news, my
goal has always been to give
my viewers something that wifi

enhance their lives and make
their communities stronger.

Honor Kay Ford As “Woman Of The Year”

Coastal Empire is proud to an
nounce this year’s Women Who
Rule event, again presented by

and United Way supporter Kay
Ford as the 2023 United Way
“Woman of the Year.” The
annual luncheon, chaired this
year by Cecilia Tran Arango of
Thomas & Hutton, will be held
Tuesday, March 14, 11:30 a.m.
to 1:30 p.m. at the Savannah
Convention Center.
Kay Ford is the cur
rent chairman of the Bank-
South Advisory Board for
the Savannah market. In her
role Ford promotes the bank’s
commitment to serving the
Savannah community. In ad
dition, she serves on the fidu
ciary board of BankSouth and
was fonnerly the chief bank
ing officer, serving the bank’s
markets throughout the state.
A fonner president and CEO
of SunTrust Bank, Savannah,
Ford retired after serving 41
years there. She held numerous
senior level positions with
in retail banking and private
wealth management, includ
ing the position of senior vice
president of Private Wealth
Management. She is a grad
uate of Leadership Savannah
and Leadership Georgia. She
currently chairs the Savannah
Technical College Foundation
Board and is the chair-elect
for the Savannah Economic
Development Authority. Her
long record of service on com
munity-driven boards includes
that of United Way of the
Coastal Empire, where she was
the 2016 campaign chair; the
Memorial Health Foundation
of Memorial Health Medical
Center; the Savannah Fund for
Excellence in Education; St.
Mary’s Home, as well as past
chair of the Housing Authority
of Savannah. As an elected of
ficial, she served on the Savan-
nah-Chatham County Board of
Education and Garden City’s
city council.
“Being from here, I
can say this is a special place
that we get to call home, and I
have always been proud to give
back to our community,” said
Kay Ford. “I am very humbled
and grateful for this honor. It
is my hope that women in our
community wifi continue to
rule and keep moving us for
ward!”

introduced House Resolution
59, a special resolution which
recognizes Monday, February
27, 2023, as Delta Sigma The
ta Sorority Day at the Capitol.
These legislators also issued
the following statement:
“We are so honored
to welcome those celebrating
‘Delta Day’ to the Capitol.
The women who founded our
sisterhood promoted academic
excellence and provided assis
tance to those in need. We are
proud to be their Delta sisters
and recognize their legacy. ”
This resolution com
memorates 110 years of service
and the 22 young women who
founded the sisterhood. Delta
Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was
founded on January 13, 1913,
on the campus of Howard Uni
versity in Washington D.C. The
students founded the organiza
tion with the goal of promoting
public service on the universi
ty’s campus. One of the new
ly found sorority’s first public
acts was to participate in the
1913 Woman Suffrage Pro
cession. These African Amer
ican women refused efforts to
place them at the end of the
processional behind the other
suffrage marchers.
Additionally, these
legislators plan to host an
event to celebrate “Delta Day”
on Feb. 27. Details about this
event wifi be forthcoming.

Rep. Sheila Jones represents
the citizens of District 60.
