The Landings Landlovers Flea Market Is
Back!!!
a philanthropic group at The
Landings, a residential com
munity on Skidaway Island,
held a Flea Market in an ef
fort to raise money for needy
charities in the Savannah area.
The idea was to have Landings
residents donate items they no
longer used, to sell at a one-day
giant event open to the general
public.
The Landlovers Flea
Market was such a huge suc
cess it has become an annual
event. Last year over 2,000
customers attended. Many of
the attendees have been com
ing for years and bring their
family and friends, many from
out of State.
Even though the
Market opens at 9:00, folks
start lining up at 6:30 in order
to get first crack at the bar
gains. There are approximately
250 tables full of merchandise .
Items include furniture, house
hold items, sporting goods,
tools, jewelry, electronics, lug
gage, toys, art, garden equip
ment, linens, kitchenware,
glassware, and much, much
more. And the prices are in
credible. The goal is to sell ev
erything within 3 hours, so you
can imagine how aggressive
the prices are.
All unsold items are
donated to the Salvation Army.
All monies raised continues to
help people and organizations
in and around Savannah.
The event is held
the second Saturday in March
each year. This year the date
is March 11th. The location is
the Messiah Lutheran Church
on Skidaway Island. It’s a
cash-only event. Although the
Market opens at 9:00, get there
early. Parking is plentiful. A
fun morning is guaranteed to
all.
Senator Mallow Introduces Senate Resolution
To Reform Local Option Sales Tax Rules
Senator Derek Mal
low has introduced legislation
to reform local option sales
tax referendums and the rules
in using those funds. Local
option sales taxes are referen
dum-based tax collections to
collect additional sales taxes
for specific reasons or proj
ects and have a sunset date
attached. Once the date of the
sunset nears, future votes or
negotiations must take place.
As we have watched
the proliferation of various
local option sales tax refer
endums not just in Chatham
County but across the state, I
have introduced Senate Res
olution 147 which creates the
Senate Local Option Sales Tax
Study Committee. Because
local politics may affect the
determination of local option
sales tax agreements and thus
politics could prove harmful to
the interests of local residents,
we believe new guardrails
should be established govern
ing the determination of local
option sales tax agreements.
Sen. Derek Mallow
In my resolution,
the committee shall be com
posed of seven members of the
Senate to be appointed by the
President of the Senate and the
President shall also appoint an
additional two non-legislative
members of the committee , and
designate a legislative member
of the committee as chairper
son of the committee. The du
ties will include a study of the
conditions, needs, issues, and
problems mentioned above or
related to in sales tax program
referendums. This committee
will also recommend any ac
tion or legislation which the
committee deems necessary or
appropriate.
I encourage you to
please let me know of issues
that are important to us in Sa
vannah. Should you visit the
Capitol during session, please
stop and see me in 304-B of
the Coverdell Legislative Of
fice Building. My phone at the
Capitol is (404) 656-7586 and
my email is derek.mallow@
senate.ga.gov. I look forward
to serving all of you.
