Johnson Named
SEC Freshman of
the Year

Flau’jae Johnson, a
freshman guard on the Loui
siana State University wom
en’s basketball team, has been
named the Southeastern Con
ference Freshman of the Year
in addition to being named to
the SEC All-Freshman Team.
Johnson came to LSU
as a highly touted freshman
ranked as the No. 26 player in
the nation while at Sprayberry
High School in Marietta, Geor
gia. She made an immediate
impact in Baton Rouge, scor
ing 11.6 points per game and
bringing down 5.9 rebounds
per game. She also averaged
1.3 steals and 1.7 assists per
game in addition to getting 22
blocks while shooting 45 per
cent from the held. She was
named SEC Freshman of the
Week three times.
Her talent was on
display right out of the gate.
In her collegiate debut the Sa
vannah, Georgia native scored
14 points and grabbed eight
rebounds while also recording
two assists, two blocks and one
steal. Through her first week
of college basketball, Johnson
scored in double-figures all
three games.
Standing 5-foot-10,
Johnson had a career-high 27
points and six steals against
Northwestern State, 13 re
bounds against Alabama Bir
mingham and six assists
against Georgia.
Lanier Re-signs
With CFL Team

The Saskatchewan
Roughriders have re-signed
Savannah native Anthony La
nier to a one-year contract for
the 2023 season that is worth
$250,000. The deal makes
Lanier the highest paid Amer
ican defensive player in the
Canadian Football League. He
also received a $100,000 sign
ing bonus to remain with the
Roughriders organization.
Lanier had a break
out season in 2022, recording
19 tackles, eight sacks and
two forced fumbles last year.
Through 21 games with the
Roughriders, he has notched
32 tackles, nine sacks and two
forced fumbles. The six-foot-
six, 285-pound Lanier came
north of the border for the 2021
campaign after spending parts
of five seasons in the NFL with
four different clubs (Washing
ton, Los Angeles Chargers,
Kansas City and New Orleans).
The 29-year old Lani
er was a star athlete at Jenkins
High School which led to an
athletic scholarship to Alabama
A&M.
Lady Tigers Fall in
SIAC Tournament

The Savannah State
women’s basketball team had a
short stay in the SIAC Tourna
ment, falling 63-62 to Edward
Waters in the quarterfinals on
March 2. Savannah State host
ed the tournament this year in
Tiger Arena.
SSU led 15-12 after
one quarter of play but trailed
27-26 at the half. Savannah
State came out flat in the third
quarter and quickly fell be
hind by nine points. The SSU
deficit grew to 12 points with
just over a minute left in the
third quarter. The Lady Tigers
trailed by ten early in the fourth
quarter but used a 11-0 run to
go ahead by one with 6:58 on

the clock. From that point on
the game was very tight. Mia
Goolsby hit a free throw with
12 seconds remaining to tie the
game at 62 but Edward Waters’
Khadijah Smith made the game
winning free throw with three
seconds left to eliminate SSU.

ished the game missing all 13
3-point attempts, being out-re
bounded 34 to 28 and going
24 for 38 at the free throw
line. Nyla Allen had 25 points
and four steals for Savannah
Paris Thompson
State (17-8) while Bria Gibbs
chipped in 16 points. Amari
Heard had a team-high five re
bounds. It was the final game
in a SSU uniform for seniors

tumn Westmoreland and Paris
Thompson.
Tigers End Season
on Losing Skid
The Savannah State
men’s basketball team was
hoping to win their second
SIAC tournament this season
but things did not work out in
their favor as they were bound
ed in the quarterfinals of the
2023 tournament after a 78-
68 setback from Benedict on
March 2 in a game played at Ti
ger Arena. The loss ends SSU’s
season at 15-11 as well as with
a five game losing streak.

to a 28-9 lead with 5:30 left
in the opening half. Savannah
State trailed by as many as 21
points in the first period and
was down 39-22 at the half.
With 14:44 left in the
second half, Savannah State
found themselves down by 31
at 55-24. That woke up the Ti
gers as they went on a 15-2 run
to close their gap to 18 with
just over 11 minutes left. Down
by 20 with ten and a half min
utes left, Savannah State strung
together a 16-3 run that put
them down by seven with six
minutes remaining. SSU would
cut their deficit to five in the
closing seconds but could not
get any closer.
Eleik Bowles had 23
points and seven rebounds for
the Tigers, Ayjay Plain had 15
points, 10 assists and six re
bounds while Andrew Okoro-
