State Senator Derek Mallow Takes Stand Against
Tax-Payer Funding for Private Education
State Senator Derek
Mallow is leading the fight to
defeat Senate Bill 233, a Senate
bill designed to have adverse
impacts on public schools. The
condition of education in Geor
gia is already in extreme dis
repair. This bill, designed by
Republican senators, is devot
ed to providing some parents a
financial taxpayer windfall, to
allow their children to attend a
private school. This legislation
is unneeded. A voucher system
is essentially useless to rural
students where private schools
are few and/or refuse to ed
ucate all students who apply.
Studies show that low-income
children, in particular, give up
vouchers and return to public
schools.
Senate Bill 233 does
not help the 100 Georgia coun
ties that don’t have private
schools, whose public schools
will have to rely on ‘thoughts
and prayers,’ due to the push of
state dollars to private schools.
We continue to underfund
school transportation and for
our ancillary public-school
educators. We haven’t raised
funding for transportation in
the last 15 years. Our pub
lic-school buses are in disre
pair, gasoline costs continue to
rise, and we no longer provide
school bus drivers with appro
priate health care packages.
The first item we
must change is a requirement
that all children must attend
kindergarten. Kindergarten
is not required in the State of
Georgia at the current time. In
stead of funding private school,
we need to fully fund Pre-K.
Currently, children must partic
ipate in a selective lottery sys
tem that leaves many sidelined,
even though we have more than
$5 billion in the Georgia Lot
tery surplus. In addition, Pre-K
teachers are still not on the full
funding schedule for the K-12
system. Statistics have shown
us the earlier a child is educat
ed, the better suited they are to
have proficient literacy by the
third grade.
Senate Bill 233 had
no fiscal note in place but esti
mates show our public schools
could lose an additional $210
million every year. While we
haven’t fully funded the state’s
Quality Basic Education for
mula, there is so much we can
do to assist our public schools,
but we don’t need to fund pri
vate schools.
Luck of the Draw:
My Story of the Air War in Europe
On Tuesday, March
21st at 4:00 PM the museum
is hosting a panel discussion
on the rereleased book “Luck
of the Draw: My Story of the
Air War in Europe’’ By Frank
Murphy. Luck of the Draw is
more than a war story. It’s the
incredible, inspiring story of
Frank Murphy, one of the few
survivors from the 100th Bom
bardment Group, who cheated
death for months in a German
POW camp after being shot
out of his B-17 Flying Fortress.
Now with a new foreword writ
ten by his granddaughter, and
museum trustee, Chloe Melas,
of CNN, and daughter Eliza
beth Murphy. The character of
Frank Murphy will be featured
in the upcoming miniseries
“Masters of the Air.’’ Executive
Producer Tom Hanks said, “In
the pursuit of authenticity, of
accurate history and undeni
able courage, no words matter
more than, ‘I was there.’ Read
Luck of the Draw and the life
of Frank Murphy and ponder
this: how did those boys do
such things?”
Join us to hear
Frank’s granddaughter Chloe
Melas, his daughter Elizabeth
Murphy, longtime friend and
museum trustee John O’Neil
III and museum Director of
Education Heather Thies speak
in a panel discussion about the
life of WWII 8th Air Force,
100thBG/418thBS, navigator,
Captain Frank Murphy.
Recent reviews of
this book have been featured
in the Wall Street Journal, New
York Times, Atlanta Journal
Constitution, and CNN.
