HBCU Basketball Round-Up
The conference
champions have been crowned
and teams have begun their
quest to win a national cham
pionship.
Winston-Salem State
won the men’s CIAA Tour
nament with a 62-57 victory
over Lincoln (PA). The Rams
advanced to the Division II
Tournament along with Virgin
ia Union who won the regular
season CIAA title. WSSU lost
to Indiana University (PA) 52-
50 in the opening round but
VUU advanced to the second
round after knocking off Fair
mont State 66-64. Virginia
Union faced Indiana University
(PA) in the regional semifinals
on March 12 and lost 60-45.
Miles won the SI AC
Tournament with a 60-46 win
over Benedict. The Golden
Bears played Nova South
eastern in the opening round
of the Division II tournament
and were crushed 97-55 while
SIAC regular season champ
Tuskegee played West Ala
bama in the Div. II tournament
and lost 70-64.
Howard won the
ME AC men’s tournament after
a 65-64 win over Norfolk State.
The Bison will play Kansas in
the first round of the Division I
tournament.
Texas Southern beat
Grambling State 61-58 to win
the SWAC tournament. The Ti
gers will play Fairleigh Dick
inson in the First Four of the
Division I tournament while
regular season champ Alcorn
State will play North Texas in
the first round of the NIT.
Langston, Xavier
(La) and Tougaloo all partic
ipated in the NAIA national
tournament and Langston and
Tougaloo have made it to the
Round of 16.
Elizabeth City State
won the CIAA women’s tour
nament over Shaw, 55-40. The
Vikings lost to Glenville State
84-60 in the first round of the
Div. II tournament.
Tuskegee won the
SIAC women’s tournament
over Miles 72-65 and lost in
the opening round of the Div.
II tournament to Tampa 82-64.
Norfolk State beat
Howard in the MEAC wom
en’s championship 56-52 and
will face South Carolina in
the first round of the Division
I tournament. Morgan State’s
women were invited to the
NIT.
Southern defeated
Arkansas Pine Bluff 62-53
for the SWAC women’s tour
nament and will play Sacred
Heart in the opening round of
the Div. I tournament. Jackson
State was invited to the Wom
en’s NIT.
DeLoach Earns All
Conference Honors

Savannah native Ja
len DeLoach was one of three
members of the Virginia Com
monwealth men’s basketball
team to earn A-10 honors for
their performance on the bas
ketball court during the 2022-
23 regular season. DeLoach
was named to the Third Team.
DeLoach had a out
standing sophomore season,
averaging 10.0 points, 7.1 re
bounds (seventh in the A-10)
and 1.3 blocks per game (fifth
in the A-10), while shooting
.561 from the floor. The 6-9
forward, who averaged 4.1
points and 3.7 rebounds per
game last season, recorded
four double-doubles during the
regular season and posted 18
double-figure scoring efforts.
He had a career-high
19 points against St. Joseph’s,
13 rebounds against LaSalle
and six steals against Howard
during the regular season.
During the confer
ence tournament, DeLoach av
eraged 9.7 points, six rebounds,
2.3 blocks, 2.3 assists and 1.3
steals per game. In the A-10
championship contest, a 68-56
win over Dayton, DeLoach had
a double-double with 13 points
and 10 rebounds. The Rams
will play St. Mary’s in the first
round of the NCAA tourna
ment on March 17.
DeLoach is the son of
Robert and Ivy DeLoach.
Owens Joins
Citadel Coaching

Savannah native La
mar Owens has been hired as
an assistant football coach at
The Citadel. Owens will coach
the Bulldog cornerbacks.
Owens arrived at
the Charleston, South Caroli
na based military school after
most recently serving as a wide
receivers coach at Georgia
Southern in 2019. Before that,
he spent 11 seasons at Geor
gia Tech. While at Tech he
coached the A-Backs. He was
also named the Yellow Jackets
special teams coordinator in
2016 and the following year
was named recruiting coordi
nator.
The 39-year old Ow
ens played quarterback at the
Naval Academy (2002-05) but
earned his bachelor’s degree in
economics from Maryland in
2008.

Gibbs Joins 10000 Point Club

Savannah State’s Bria
Gibbs has become the latest
member of the Savannah State
women’s basketball team to
reach 1,000 points in their col
lege basketball career.
A native of Greens
boro, North Carolina, Gibbs
spent her first two years of col
lege playing on the Division I
level at Presbyterian where she
scored 163 points as a fresh
man and 144 points during her
sophomore season in 2019-20.
The following year
the 5-foot-10 in forward trans
ferred to Savannah State where
she finished her career. During
the pandemic-shorten 2020-21
season she tallied 97 points but
had a career-high 381 points
during the 2021-22 season
and followed that by scoring
311 points during the 2022-23
campaign which adds up to
1,093 career points. Gibbs also
has over 600 career rebounds,
snagging 159 at Presbyterian
and 497 at SSU for a total of
656.
Since 1987, Gibbs
becomes the 11th Lady Tiger
to score at least 1,000 points
in her career. She joins Kim
Jones (1,127 points), Patricia
Gaskins (1,021), Mabel Sand
ers (1,839), Stephanie Johnson
(1,159), Leza Cox (1,083),
Tarina Lloyd (1,345), Ezinne
Kalu (2,119), Jasmine Nor
man (1,029), Kenyata Hendrix
(1,252) and Le’Andrea Gillis
(1,200).

Big At Panther Invite

The Savannah State
men’s and women’s outdoor
track and held teams continued
their season this week with a
trip to the Panther Invitational,
hosted by Clark Atlanta Uni
versity.
Ravyn Cystrunk led
the Lady Tigers with two ex
ceptional performances on
Friday. Cystrunk won both the
200 meter and 400 meter dash
es. In the 200m, she ran a 25.00
for a new personal best record.
In the 400m, she led the held
with a 56.99, also a new per
sonal best record.
Both of her perfor
mances moved her into the
NCAA Division II standings.
In the 400m, she is ranked No.
3 in the nation and she is No.
11 in the 200m. The standings
help determine the qualifiers
for the NCAA Outdoor Cham
pionship later this spring.
Elsewhere on the
track, Savannah State senior
Kayla Chance—and five time
school record holder—won
the 1500m run with a time of
5:02.29. Chance also won the
3000 Steeplechase with a time
of 12:21.82—a new personal
best time in the event.
The relay team of
Jeainna Bryant, Cystrunk,
Sadrea Mabry and Delily ah
Pelham finished third in the
4x100m relay with a time of
48.12.
In the held, Mabry
led the Lady Tigers with a first
place finish in the triple jump,
registering an 11.56m effort.
Mabry is ranked No. 6 nation
ally in the event. She also led
the her team in the long jump
with a fourth place finish re
cording 5.03m jump.
Ky’Leigha Robinson
set new personal bests in the
high jump and long jump. She
finished sixth in the high jump
with a 1,45m effort. In the long
jump, she recorded a 4.68m ef
fort and a 17th place finish.
For the Tigers, Win
fred Porter continued to dom
inate on the track. The sopho
more had another outstanding
week, winning the 100m event
with a time of 10.64.
Porter leads all of
NCAA Division II in the 100m
rankings after setting a new
personal best record (10.51) at
the Savannah State Eyeopen-
er on Feb. 25. He’s earned an
NCAA provisional marking,
indicating he will compete in
the event at the 2023 NCAA
Outdoor Championship.
Porter is also ranked
nationally in the 200m event.
On Friday, he ran a 21.66 to
win the event. The finish at
the Panther Invitational moved
him into the No. 3 spot in the
national standings.
In the 800m run,
Alex Loyd set a new person
al best with a time of 2:11.26,
finishing 16th. Erik Roberts
also set a new personal best in
the 5000m, finish 10th with a
time of 18:03.19. Joseph Hale
set new college bests in the
1500m (4:58.10) and 5000m
(19.03.69) as well.
Nyzaveon Thompson
finished second in the 110m
hurdles with a time of 15.61.
In the 400m hurdles, he ran a
58.81 to finish in fourth. He is
nationally ranked No. 13 in the
400m hurdles event.
The relay team of
Thompson, Porter, Solomon
Mitchell and Antonio Russell
finished second in the 4x100
relay with a time of 42.45.
Several Tigers set
new personal bests and earned
high rankings in the held on
Friday.
Cameron Edwards
finished second in the triple
jump with a new personal best
effort of 14.18m. He is nation
ally ranked No. 3 in the event.
Edwards also set a new person
al best in the long jump with a
6.28m effort and a 12th place
finish.
Dominique Bailey
finished fifth in the long jump
with a new college best 6.54m
effort. He is ranked No. 27 na
tionally in the event.
Freshman extraordi
naire Aidan Holliman finished
fourth in the high jump with
a 1.93m effort. Holliman is
ranked No. 2 in the national
standings for the event follow
ing his new school record of
2.00m set at the Savannah State
Eyeopener on Feb. 25.
Daeshaun Logan fin
ished sixth in the high jump
with a 1.83m effort. He is
ranked No. 11 nationally.
In the discuss event,
Evan Guyton set a new person
al best of 40.93m finishing in
second place and moving into
the rankings at No. 26.
Savannah State men’s
and women’s outdoor track and
held teams continue the season
with the annual Savannah State
Orange & Blue on March 18 at
Theodore A. Wright Stadium.
The free event will
kick-off at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
