Savannah State Holds Annual Honors Convocation
Jewish Community Launches Security Initiative
One of the highest
priorities at Savannah Jewish
Federation is ensuring the safe
ty and security of the Jewish
community in Savannah.
Antisemitic incidents
in the U.S. rose 36% in 2022,
an annual audit by the An
ti-Defamation League shows.
This escalation in
antisemitic incidents comes
just as ADL has reported on
Americans’ highest level of an
tisemitic attitudes in decades,”
the report says, adding that
public officials, famous artists
and social media stars have
been instrumental in normal
izing longstanding antisemitic
tropes.
To better protect the
Savannah Jewish community
who attend area synagogues
and other Jewish institutions in
Savannah, the Savannah Jew
ish Federation has partnered
with Secure Community Net
work (SCN) to manage securi
ty programs in our community.
Established in 2004
under the auspices of the
Jewish Federations of North
America and the Conference of
Presidents of Major Jewish Or
ganizations, SCN is the official
safety and security organiza
tion of the Jewish community
in North America.
Thanks to the gen
erosity of donors through the
Savannah Jewish Federation
Annual Community Campaign
and the vital partnership with
SCN, the Savannah Jewish
Federation has launched it’s
first-ever Jewish Community
Security program. After a near
ly year-long national search
which considered over 250
applicants, a full-time Commu
nity Security Director has been
hired - Brett Butler.
Brett Butler brings
a wealth of experience to the
position of Community Secu
rity Director following almost
thirty years of service with the
Arlington (VA) County Police
Department. As a Captain in
the Criminal Investigations
Section he supervised over 60
detectives, oversaw the Homi
cide Unit, advocated for laws
that strengthened law enforce
ment, and has significant expe
rience in community policing,
working with government en
tities, and liaising with com
munity civic organizations.
He previously instructed at the
Northern VA Criminal Justice
Academy where he trained oth
er officers.
“I am honored to take
on this role with the Federa
tion to support the safety and
security of the Savannah Jew
ish community,” said Butler.
“Making comprehensive secu
rity a priority is a significant
step that will positively affect
Jewish life in Savannah going
forward.”
Butler sees himself
as a liaison, harnessing great
relationships with local law en
forcement throughout the Sa
vannah area, which is helpful
to have before you need them
in a time of crisis.
The goal of the com
munity security initiative is to
build community awareness
about safety, but not have over
shadowing fear.
Because the Savan
nah Jewish Federation’s se
curity program is powered by
SCN, it will have access to
SCN’s national security advi
sors, intelligence analysts and
other professionals as well as
benefiting from SCN’s Nation
al Jewish Security Operations
Command Center in Chicago.
Butler will be employed by
SCN and report to both SCN
Deputy Director of Operations
and Savannah Federation CEO.
Butler will act as an
expert security advisor, liaison
and training coordinator for the
community. Under his direc
tion, security practices will be
enacted, including, but not lim
ited to:
• Trainings for schools, syna
gogues and other institutions;
• Security consultations and
threat assessments of our Jew
ish institutions;
• On-hand community liaison
with law enforcement for emer
gency events that may occur
The Savannah Jew
ish Federation will be offering
community security trainings.
These are open to the com
munity and EVERYONE is
encouraged to attend. Help
protect yourself, your family,
and our community by being
prepared.
Both courses are be
ing offered twice for your con
venience. No RS VP necessary.
All sessions will be held at the
Jewish Educational Alliance,
5111 Abercorn Street.

Be Aware, SCN’s Introduc

- whether you are in a syna
gogue, at school, a restaurant,
concert, or going about your
everyday activities.

Countering Active Threat

threat event including steps to
survive: RUN, HIDE^FIGHT.
Also, the Savannah
Jewish Federation is hosting a
Security Town Hall on Thurs
day, April 27 at 7:00 PM at the
Jewish Educational Alliance.
Come meet Brett Butler, along
with local law enforcement and
Savannah leadership, to learn
how we can work together to
best enhance our security.
