Savannah Technical College Peace Officer
Academy Honors April 2023 Graduates
Group photo by Doug Currie
Twelve students from
the Savannah Technical Col
lege Peace Officer Academy
celebrated graduating from the
program with a ceremony on
April 20,2023. These graduates
have completed coursework
containing the entire Georgia
Peace Officer Standards &
Training (P.O.S.T.) Basic Law
Enforcement Training Course.
Their successful completion of
the program qualifies them to
be state-certified peace officers.
This is the 41st group
of students to complete the
program since its inception
in 2009. To date, the program
has graduated more than 400
P.O.S.T.-certihed officers.
Eleven of these graduates have
been hired by area police de
partments. STC’s Peace Officer
Academy has a 100% place
ment rate (AY21).
Each cohort selects
a fallen officer for whom the
graduating class will be named.
The cohorts have a tradition of
giving the family of the fallen
officer a challenge coin ded
icated to the officer. A chal
lenge coin is a symbol of an
unbreakable bond of dedication
and allegiance among military
personnel and law enforcement
officers. The challenge coin
tradition started as a military
tradition in World War I and
was later adopted by law en
forcement.
This cohort hon
ors Capt. Ramsey Mannon of
Effingham County Sherriff’s
Office, who passed away on
August 12, 2021 from com
plications as the result of con
tracting COVID-19 in the line
of duty. Captain Mannon was a
U.S. Air Force Veteran and had
served with the Rincon Police
Department and Effingham
County Sheriff’s Office for 38
years in various law enforce
ment positions. He is survived
by his wife, two children, and
two grandchildren.
The Basic POST
Certification Technical Certifi
cate of Credit (TCC) provides
students with the knowledge,
skills, and abilities necessary
to become competent law en
forcement officers. The 11-
week cohort program utilizes
classroom instruction pertain
ing to criminal justice theory
and the prevailing principles
of modern law enforcement,
as well as practical applica
tion of pertinent enforcement
skills. College coursework
contains the entire Georgia
Peace Officers Standards &
Training (P.O.S.T.) Basic Law
Enforcement Training Course
so that successful completion
of the program will qualify
the student to be a state-certi
fied peace officer. Students that
qualify for HOPE may receive
additional funds through the
HOPE Career Grant with this
program.
This TCC offers a
first step in law enforcement.
Select courses in the Basic
Law Enforcement Certificate
program transfer towards an
Associate of Applied Science
Degree in Criminal Justice.
Many agencies pay all or part
of the tuition for officers to
work toward degrees in crim
inal justice, police science,
administration of justice, or
public administration and pay
higher salaries to those who
earn one of those degrees.

Biden’s Re-Election Announcement To Test
Resolve Of Black Voters
By Stacy M. Brown, NNPA Newswire Senior National Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia
The track record that
Biden has on racial issues has
also been debated in the Black
community. His efforts to pass
a comprehensive voting rights
package and reduce gun vio
lence have been unsuccessful,
but he has honored campaign
vows to select a Black wom
an as his vice president and
appoint one to the Supreme
Court. Biden also must over
come the problems caused by
some of his supporters private
ly and publicly bashing Harris,
an issue that has alienated some
Black voters.
Four years after an
nouncing his campaign for the
2020 election that finally re
sulted in the defeat of the crim
inally indicted and twice-im
peached Donald Trump, Biden
again seeks to beat back a run
by the MAGA leader.
Reportedly, Biden’s
most prominent supporters
have been invited to a financial
summit in Washington, D.C,
in the days running up to his
planned announcement, which
has kicked off a wild race to
stock the president’s war chest.
The meeting, planned for Fri
day, is viewed as an important
first step in a campaign that is
going to try its best to fly under
the radar for at least one year.
After that, Biden ex
pects to start the process of hir
ing a team that will be able to
function independently of the

White House. The team will
include a campaign manager,
communication assistants, state
campaign directors, pollsters,
finance managers, volunteers,
and others. According to re
ports, Julie Chavez Rodriguez,
a top White House adviser and
the granddaughter of the late
American labor leader Cesar
Chavez, is in the running to
oversee the re-election cam
paign. Chavez counted as a
prominent figure in the labor
movement in the United States.
*On Tuesday, April
25th, President Joe Biden of
ficially announced that he is
running for re-election as a
Democratic candidate in 2024.
