Georgia Historical Society Dedicates New Civil Rights Trail
Historical Marker Recognizing Political & Civic Leader
Mamie George Williams
Continued from Page 1
She organized vot
er campaigns and registered
African-American women to
vote in the 1920 presidential
election. Although the 19th
Amendment passed that year,
Georgia women were preclud
ed from voting until 1922,
and African-American women
did not gain suffrage until the
passage of the Federal Voting
Rights Act in 1965. Despite
these challenges and those she
faced due to Jim Crow laws,
she continued in politics, and
in 1924 Williams was appoint
ed to serve on the Republican
National Committee.

ganizations for the erection of
the marker honoring Mamie
George S. Wiliams, African
American Suffragist, Politician
and Community Activist. In
her remarks she cited that The
Savannah Tribune recorded
the obstacles and accomplish
ments of Mrs. Williams during
her lifetime, and pledge that
in the memory and spirit of
Mamie George Williams, that
The Tribune would continue to
publish the stories of the “Ma
mies” of today who are contin
uously working as community
activists promoting voter regis
tration/education/engagement
and advocating for the rights of
women and the marginalized
who are confronted with some
of the same restrictive and
oppressive laws and policies.
She reminded the audience
that “Mamie George Williams
is Our history; she is Women’s
history,” then challenged the
audience, especially the youth,
that “If Mamie did it while she
was alive, with all the road
blocks in her way during her
time, what does that mean for
us? If Mamie did it, we can do
it!”
