Emmaus House Soup Kitchen Announces The
Appointment of 3 New Board Members
GSO Celebrates 80 Years of Sisterhood
and Service
Sigma Tau, which is located
on the Armstrong Campus of
Georgia Southern University.
The 80th Anniver
sary celebration took place
under the leadership of the
Chapter’s 43rd President, Ni
cole S. Fields. The chairper
son for the event was Taqwaa
F. Saleem who also served as
the hostess and the moderator.
Committee members included
Kimberly S. Rhodes and Iva-
nette D. Richardson. President
Fields opened the program
with a heartfelt, resounding
welcome. Vice President, Ni
cole M. Williams presented the
occasion for this prestigious
milestone in the organization’s
history, which was followed
by a spirit filled meditative
message and a blessing of the
meal by Chaplain Dr. Henrietta
S. Gray. During the Tea Time
Lunch, live entertainment was
provided by saxophonist, Dar
rel Anderson, with a soothing
rendition of relaxing tunes. A
special feature of this momen
tous occasion was the Chapter
President Roll Call, chronolog
ically identifying the lineage of
past through present presidents
and the dates of their com
mitment to serve in that role.
Those who were present stood
and received appreciative ap
plause and comments. This
culminated with an Anniversa
ry Celebration Video by Kim
berly S. Rhodes, Technology
Committee Chairman, which
was a visual composition of the
GSO’s highlights and accom
plishments.
The popular song,
“We Are One’’ by Maze fea
turing Frankie Beverly, ush
ered in the Legacies of Service
Recognition presentation that
was led by the Sisterly Rela
tions Committee Chairman,
Terri E. Lewis. Pearl member,
Emma Lue Preer, was congrat
ulated for 65 years of continu
ous membership, beginning in
1958 when she joined Gamma
Upsilon as an undergraduate
student at Savannah State Col
lege through matriculation and
then joining the Gamma Sig
ma Omega Chapter. A come
dic presentation and reflection
on the past was performed by
Dr. Clemontine F. Washing
ton, South Atlantic Region
Hodegos. She danced, joked,
and sang her way through Tina
Turner’s infamous “Rolling On
The River’’. Closing remarks
were brought by Johnye W.
Gillans, Assistant Graduate
Advisor for Sigma Tau. She
challenged participants to con
tinue to build the sisterhood
through acts of benevolence
and support for the community
in the years to come. Each ta
ble was decorated with delicate
tea roses as a centerpiece and
every member was given a sou
venir China tea cup and saucer
in either salmon pink or apple
green, as a piece of memorabil
ia for the occasion. Members
will fondly remember this an
niversary and all of the remark
able components that came to
gether to make it a program of
excellence!

Service Appreciation
Reception-Luncheon at the
Hungry Club Forum
On Saturday June 3,
2023, the 17th Annual Com
munity Service Appreciation
Reception-Luncheon will be
hosted by the Hungry Club
Forum of Savannah, Inc. This
popular event, will be held
at 11:30 AM, in the 3rd floor
Banquet Room of the Con-Ed
Building, located at 714 Martin
Luther King, Jr. Blvd. It brings
together leaders, advocates,
friends, neighbors, and associ
ates from across the depth and
breadth of the area community
to exchange important infor
mation on community issues
and concerns.

Wilcher, longtime HCFS mem
bers, are serving as this year’s
Co-sponsors. Veteran State

will serve as keynote speak
er with featured presentations
by Lakesha Oliver Robinson,

Andre J. Osborne, Teacher-Pas
tor, First Tabernacle Baptist
Church. The standing theme of
the celebration is “On Becom
ing the Change that We Want to
See: Launching and Assessing
Initiatives Locally for Our
selves and Our Posterity.’’ Ac
cording to the HCFS’s found
er and lead consultant, Diana
Harvey Johnson, “we have
planned an exciting program of
uplift, culture, and progress to
represent the HCFS’s reemer
gence to in-person fellowship
and programming. Come join

generate exchange on the is
sues, fellowship, and partic
ipate in our brand of Intense
Networking.
A potpourri of cultur
al enrichment, talent and en
tertainment, door prizes and a
scrumptious buffet will be the

and former HCFS President,
will serve as emcee. Entertain

leader and vestry member with

and has over twenty two years
of experience working with
displaced individuals. “I am in
awe of the part that Emmaus
House plays in the communi
ty.” Terry Newton says.
Leigh Acevedo is a
communicator and connec
tor with a passion for making
meaningful connections within
the community. She is a gradu
ate of both Leadership Savan
nah and Leadership Southeast
Georgia. “Emmaus House is a
cause that I have always cared
deeply about.” Leigh said. “It
would be a pleasure to serve
and ensure it continues to op
erate sustainably and effective
ly-”

from Savannah who will be attending SC State University.
This year marks the
80th anniversary of The Gam
ma Sigma Omega Chapter of
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
Incorporated. The commemo
rative “80th Anniversary Tea
Party” was held on Sunday,
May 21, at the historic Pirates’
House in downtown Savan
nah, Georgia. Attendees were
encouraged to wear shades of
pink and to adorn themselves
with a fancy hat or fascinator.
This event was a private affair,
where sorority members were
able to enhance their bond and
renew their commitment to the
sisterhood. It was an exuberant
affair, filled with an abundance
of food, friends, and fun.
GSO was chartered
on May 29, 1943. Since 1943,
the Chapter has provided ser
vice to the community through
carefully planned programs,
strategic involvement, and
community outreach endeav
ors. The current Chapter mem
bership stands at nearly 200
talented and energetic college
educated women. GSO is also
honored to mentor and sponsor
two undergraduate chapters in
Savannah, Gamma Upsilon at
Savannah State University and
