Fob real rollicking, royal good humor
and rich, rare and racy reading commend
us to the Smuhville Neics.
The hill prohibiting the taxing of
-drummers which has been introduce i in
Congress should be passed.
Tho managers of the State Fair are all
good men, hat they overdid themselves last
year. It is safe to say that tho nexi Sta'e
Fair will be .the grandest ever held in
■Georgia.
The Fort Valley Mirror puts its readers
on notice that the paper wili soon be pre¬
pared to come out in new dress The peo¬
ple of the Valley may congratulate them
sTvcs upon having such good papers as
toe l.irror anil the Enterprise.
The inter-stute commerce commission
Jus shown wisdom in its decision of the
race question as applied.to passenger ac
ommodationa oa -railroads. A negro will
hereafter be treated as a colored gentleman
and a representative of tho other race as a
white man.
Dunixo the year 1887 one hundred and
twenty-three persons were lynched in tl>
e
United States. This is the strongest pus.
sable proof of the laxity, delay .and unccr.
iainty which characterizes the administra¬
tion of justice in our courts—truthfully
ays an exchange.
Ir the elevated street rail way invention
cf W. r. Wood, of Clayton county, is till
that is claimed for it we may soon see little
roads of tiie kind not only in the cities but
between most country villages. A littl e
railroad of the kind would be a big thing
lor many a rural hamlet.
No true journalist will be guilty of the
fault of maligning the business capabilities
of another paper, nor will he write an ai
tide calculated to injure a neighboring
town. The Dodge Journal shows that
kind of a spirit, hut it s ability to do harm
is abridged by unalterable circumstances.
The tribute money paid by the people
of Crawford county for salt and sugar
would aggregate as great a sum as the
county taxes. Besides seasoning articles
the common foods and all wearing apparel,
as well as farm tools, are made from 15 to
00 per cent higher than actual cost by the
infamous protection laws.
Russell H. Conwkll, tho lecturer,
startles some communities by the expres
sion of iris advanced thought. In a lecture
recently li3 spoke confideutly of a chemical
Invention by mc-ans of which he believed
the government would control the weather
tn all parts of the country, an<J spoke of
transportation through the air as if it were
not far out of reach of the scientists of the
present day. He assured his hearers that
it would become th popular mode of trans¬
pmtation fer all races. His remarks and
arguments are not like those of a crank,
but appear as the utterances of a man of
advanced reasoning. Those who have
watched the wonderful strides of science in
the nse of electricity : the grand improve¬
ments made in machinery and the many
and startling inventions and discoveries in
chemistry and mechanics would not look
upon the predictions of Professor Gonwelt
as idle fancies.
NOT TRUE.
Macon Telegraph —-‘The people o(
Crawtmd had a meeting the other day to
discuss whether they would move the
railroad to Knoxville or move Knoxville,
to the railroad, there being the distance of
a mile between them.”
We are sorry to know that any person
has so mean a principle as to bear a false
statement of this kiud to the Telegraph.
There is not a word of truth in the stati
ment, except that a citizens’ meeting was
‘held. The railroad is a few yards over
half a mile from the court house—as close
ns we would have -it—and Knoxville is
just where all the citizens of the county
wish it to be. The meeting was held for
the purpose cf organizing a body to act iu
lieu of a town council until we can get a
new charter.
We know the Telegraph will not let
this untrutlifnl and slanderous report that
appeared in its usually reliable columns
go uncorrected
SUCH THINGS WILL UaITEN.
Atlanta Journal.
One of our Georgia exchanges comes to
us with the words of its big head trans¬
posed, so that it reads : “Republican. Semi
Weekly Americas.” But this is not
bad as the freak of a tipsy foreman of an
old paper in North Carolina, who “pied”
tho big head of the paper, called the
“Halifax Compiler," in making up the
forai, and in the rearrangement of the
types, he made it read “Heldre Compilas.”

“Editors arc sometimes noted for their

“Certain one-horse editors who do not
seem to understand anything about the
great question of tariff reform have taken
sides with the “protection” party, and are
spouting avout protection and free trade.
They attack tariff reform journals trade. thinking
that tariff reform means Iree Ev¬

the factory business aud understands the
issue is for tariff reform, or else ho is a

same. — Dodge Co. Journal.
We had no idea that tho Dodge
county paper advocated protection, or was
run by one-horse editors ; yet thriv reply
seems to indicate that they think such is
the case, but we do not believe it .; in fact,
it cannot ha true. We are willing to allow
that tlie Dodge county paper may copy
protection articles at times from other re¬
publican papers, but a3 to editors of that
abominable shout being entitled to rank

The Wwtcross Headlight says .- The
Knoxville Journal, a neat little pa¬
per, published at Knoxville. Crawford

infant it is bright and saucy and ere long
we may have to spank it. VV e wish it.
success.”
We arc much obliged to Jim Freeman
of the Headlight, for his notice of the
Journal and for his good wishes, but we
are certain there is one tiling he intended
to say and forgot; and that is that Tun
Journal is the biggest paper of its size lie
ever saw. Likely his head has not got
straight since the press convention at Ins
town, and as to the spanking business
well, the wire grass hi Editor Fieeroan’s
back yard will have grown into chestnut
trees halo re lie will find it an easy job to
beat The Journal at any such game.
