One of our cubscribers, in speaking of
of the Farmers’ Alliance, says that the or¬
ganization cannot accomplish,much unless
the clubs are made up of men who raise
their own supplies at home and pay cash
'for whai?they buy. The subscriber who
said 1 this runs his busencss oh the plan he
mentioned above, and is a prosperous
planter.
Some Good ShootiBg^i
The impressible Press Smith, of Sandy
Point, knows how to do something else
pretty- well besides scrying papers. Hi)
shot three times and threw one rock kill¬
ing. 27 doves, so be says. At one shot lie
killed eleven of the gentle creatures, and it
was not" a-very good day for doves, either.
Can't Go In.
Some one sends us far publication a
.letter, of a religious 'character addressed to
the ladies of Knoxville. There are two
good reasons why we will not publish the
letter. One is because we do not know
who sent it, and. the other isbecausc it is
a long religious essay. We have nothing
but good wishes for the cause oi religion,
but are not running a religious paper, and
caauot use a. letter of thia-kind.*
Military Notice..

Guards are requested by their Captain to

Tlie Railroad.
For some time the track laying has not
progressed as fast as was desired, and the
construction company offered the work to
the lowest bidder who would cb'igate to
lay a mite of track each day. The contract
has been tnkeu by an Atlanta man who is
now putting down iron in a hurry.

liamson, .a point on the Georgia Midland}

39-milcs from Knoxville. The track; will
soon be laid to Bine mountain, at which
point the iron laying will he retarded on
account of, the great amount of water
draining into the cuts. After the track
shall havs been laid on by the mountain
there will bo nothing of any consequence
to hinder the work of laying the iron.

Flint Ulver improvement.
Mr. Hoxie, the engineer employed by
the government to see if it is necessary or
'expedient to have the Flint River cleaned
out between Montezuma and Old Agency
in’this county, reported in favor of having
-the work done. A recent survey by an¬
other civil"engineer has been made for the
'purpose of finding out how ranch money
would be required to have the work done,
iand the last engineer reports that $25,000
will be sufficient, but states that be finds
'tne stream too small for navigation, We
believe that the above amount will really
,be sufficient for the improvement, and
•would liko to see the work done, hut the
Flint is too small in this county to be
navigated with anything but miniature
craft. We do not believe that, the pin
hook business that, would be done on tbe
-.river would justify the improvement that
'must necessarily be made for it.
The Crawford Guards.
, Our fine military company is not" m as
prosperous condition as it should be. New
uniforms are needed, and needed badly,
and The Journal, for one, says that., they
must have the uniforms. The
equipments- of the company are first class
j
.and only uniforms are needed to put our
boys on an equal footiug with the best
companies in the State. C attain
the couutv are inclined to look upon the
Company as a. body of young men who
organized, the Company for the fun that is
,to be got out of it, and such people
willing to contribute money to keep
up the organization. But it should be
remembered by all that, this Company is
for the protection of our homes, and the
interests of the community demand that
the Company be kept npand sustained;
This, will be a year, of- many elections,
and certain elements, which threaten the
peace and good order of the county will be
put secretly to work which may develop
into open violence. Who knows hut.what
such will be the case ?
The government of the United States
has need.for and sees fit to keep, a stand¬
ing army, and it is no. more essential to
the well-being of the Nation than . is. this
Company to Crawford county..
Some of our most influential and useful
men belong to the Company, and it is not,
and will not be kept up for any other
purposes than those which we recited
above.
Help out the Company 1 Speak up for
it and bend in your money to. buy the'
uniforms..
