Last Sunday, as Messrs, C. T; Blasin¬
game and Hugh Bankston were on their
way to church, the horse they were driv¬
ing ran away and drew the buggy in con¬
tact with odc in which were three ladies
The ladies managed to hold their horse,
and escaped with only injury to the buggy
in which they were riding. The frighten¬
ed horse continued to run, and came upon
the buggy of Mr. R. K. Webb, which was
bioken some.
Even thing considered, all escaped very
lightly; only the three buggies being
damaged and the ladies getting off with a
scare
A Unique Coin.
Mr. H. D. McCrary, of this place, has
in his possession a $50 gold piece which
js a curiosity. It is octagon.in shape and
weighs nearly a quarter of a pound. It
was made in 1851, is I 5-8 inches wide
and has nothing,on one side but ornamen¬
tal engraving, sneb as is- put- on some
watches. Around a circle are the words:
Augustus Humbert, United Slates Assay
er of Gold,. California.. The coin bears the
American Eagle with his shield and arrows
and has the usual clause, United States of
America, stamped in a circle.
Some years ago the New York World
stated that no fifty dollar coins, octagon in
shape, had ever been issued by the Gov¬
ernment- We think this coin is legal ten¬
der, notwithstanding the statement made
by the World.
Above the eagle are the numerals 187
thous.

Sandr Point liftings..
Sandy Point, May 16.—Tfi our
communication we stated that there would
be-a,fish fry at the creek on Saturday fo'
lowing. Many of your readers have
of the tragical ending of the. affair, We
had not reached , the scene, before we were
met by some of the party, w hot old us that
Wright Grant had shot himself, and that
it was accidental. With the. few fasts, we
hastened on to learn more of the details;
did not proceed more than a mile before
we met the solemn procession carrying the
unfortunate young man home- a corpse.
Many had arrived at the designated place,
and were enjoying themselves in various
ways, when all at once the report of a gun
rang out with fearful distinctness. No one
thought anything about it, as some of the
boys were hunting, until one of the boys
was seen running to the crowd, shouting,
“Wright has shot himself.” Friends ran to
him immediately, hut he was beyond the
aid of human assistance. Dr. Dewberry
made an examination, but life war nearly
extinct when lie reached him.. While re¬
loading one of the barrels-the other wer.t,
off, discharging the whole contents in his
face. He was loved and respected by all
who knew him. The family have the
sympathy ot the entire neighborhood.
• We have bad some rain since our last
report. Corn and cotton are locking nice¬
ly ; that is the cotton that is up. Some
have not finished planting ou account-of
the drynsss of the season. Nearly every¬
body have been planting out potatoes, cab-
bages, etc.
J. K. B., just tell us who the girl is, and
we will do all in our power to aid you—if
it’s to steal her. We. were once accused of
stealing a girl for another tellow. We
didn’t steal her but it looked -‘mighty like
it." Circumstantial evidence was agaiust
us, yet wo were innocent of the charge.
Now girls, lend us your ears and we will
unfold a marvelous story. J, K. B. is a
handsome young man, in fact the “prettiest
boy in town,”—don’t tell him we said that,
’twould hurt him. It’s leap year and you
have a chance of a life lime ; one that you’d
not be likely to have again. We almost
wish that we were not the big ugly boy
that we are. Gome, girls! For further
information address Dave, Sandy, Point,
Ga., and we assure you of an early reply.
We are hound to help our brother in need.
We didn’t mean to make the Ceres dudes
mad by telling whet wo. had hoard.. We,
did not give it as a fact,
Plums and dewberries are getting ripe—
There—we Hired ,tp .have written the last
with a capital.’ How fortunate for, us that
ive did not! If we had. poor little Dave
wouldhave been.ip more distress.,. A.
tain Dr. would be flinging more mud at his
innocent head..
The friends .of ;'Mts.. Eliza Eubanks will
