Captain John Dent has a very high road

was putting Jane down to her best, on .a

An Informal Inquests
On Wednesday a large party of men
went out to an old field where there was
said to be a newly made grave.. They
thought probably the investigation .might
lead to the discovery of some crime.
After Jesse Dent and Jake Blasingame
had dug a short distance into the ground
the decomposed body of a pig was found.
A party of little darkies who were watch¬
ing grinned and snickered and the silent,!
but perspiring crowd of men returned ia
lqafing quarters in town.

TJbe l-’iyvt Peaches.
On last. Tuesday Mr. T, F. Matbcsws
brought in the first peck,of ripe peaches.
It will be remembered that The Journal
offered six months subscription to the one
who would briHg in the first pock of ripe
peaches.-and it was this advertisement that
caused Mr. Mathews to delay not, to bring
in the delicious peaches. He could have
brought them earlier, but, as he has sev¬
eral boarders and a good many others on
his place, the fruit. w®s kept, picked, off as
it> ripened...
Mrs. J.;W. Stroad sent in several, beau¬
ties the same day for which the Editor
Expresses his thanks.
Graia Crops In Crawford.
Before the rains came it, was thought
.that the oat and wheat crops were almost
ruir.e<L Never was-there better prospects
for good small grain crops than we had as
(ate a® March, but the very, dry weather
injured these cropp-materially
At .this time, our farmers are more hope¬
ful. Some report an average turnout of
: oats, and nearly-an average in.-.wheat. Very
• few will come so low as half a,crop in either
wheat or oats. It is ,about fair to estimate
that three-fourths of an average orop of
both wheat and oats will bo gathered,
Coro ..is .doing, well, though somewhat
backward.' The-outlook at.present foff the
farmers is encouraging.

manner in which he dissembled love finally
overcame her scruples, and she married
him, as staled, in Memphis. The honey¬
