Sorter Tapped Him.
A day or two ago Captain J. J. Gaill
ard came upon a negro,at Culpepper creek
whe was bathing the head of anorher dai
key who seemed to be in distress. When
questioned, the man who was acting as
nurse said that he and-the o.ih r fellow had
a dispute ovei some checks, and that they
“fell out and fit, and he took a piece of
scautling and sorter tapped him o;i the
head.
The wounded man had. been struck sev¬
eral hours and at that time was delirous.
His scull was.fractured. It is evident that
a sort of a tap from tue scantling man
would break the hind legs of a kicking mule.
Crop Prospects.
The crops.of cotton and corn arc as fine
as they have been in years- In portions
ot the county .they have rarely ever been
as good.
The small cro.pa such as surging sweet
potatoes and turnips are magnificent.
Farmers through the country, generally,
have paid more attention to the raising of
hogs, and tun meat crop, as it is called,
will probably be heavier than during any
year since the war.
All things considered, the prospects for a
good trade in the fall, and better times a
mong the tillers of the soil seem brighter
than usual. If no unlooksd for calamity
befalls the crops money matters will be ea
s’er in our country, and the farmer wi'l
ouce again bo placed where he may rid
himself of the dreaded menster—debt
When his prospects have beeu brightest he
lias heretofore plunged deeper than evor in
to debt but he will not likely do the same
thiug again.
