The Atlanta Evening Journal assures ns
that Sam Small was beaten for the senate.
Now. where is the third party.
The returns of the prohibition election
in Laurens county give the antis 41 ma
j ority. Notice of a contest has been filed.
Alliancemen in North Carolina have
whipped out the bagging trust, so far as
that state is concerned. No jute bagging
is used in tho Old North State.
The Alliance Advocate, which is pub
lished at Montezuma, has become a thor
on ghly good agricultural paper, and should
go into every farmer’s home m the South.
Some men who claim to be too poor to
take their county paper can always find
tiie cash to buy cheap liquor when they go
to town. This would lie a grand old
country were it not for such people.
The Savannah Morning News reaches
this place on the same iu which it is pnb
lished. -The Macon morning paper doos

evening Atlanta papers. Onr town is now

The farm produts of this country have
to compete with the cheapest markets or.
earth, aud what the farmer buys must he
purchased in the dearest market in the
world. Our great ? tariff laws place the
farmer in this condition.
Monroe county politics which had sim¬
mered down to a tepid heat, marmed up
considerably a few days ago. The cause
of this excitement was brought about by a
negro coming into the race for the legis¬
lature against tho nominees.
In elections like the last, where there
was no known opposition to the democrat¬
ic nominees, it behooves every one who can
convenient iy do so, to cast his vote, not
only for certain candidates, but for all tlm
nominees. No one who will think over the
matter candidly will fail to vote for each
and every nominee.
On tho front page wo give this week a
few ix'racts from a speech made by Hon,
Tom Watson in McDuffie county. Mr.
Watson is one of the best lawyers in Geor¬
gia today, and the day is not far distant,
when ho will take rank among tne ablest
statesmen ofth^conntry. He is our Alex
Stephens number two.
Hon. Samuel .T. Tilden, whon the pro¬
tection democrats sometimes refer to
their political exponent, said of the pres¬
ent tariff that it was passed during
congressional cm nival of manufacturers,”
end ibat it ‘ lessened the productive
of human labor as if God had cursed
with ungeuial climate or ungrateful soil.”
