The Writer has been rbrooded in gloom
since the vain of the night of 14th of April.
At that time our lands had been neatly
prepared, and a good stand of corn was
up, hut the rain fell so hastily that the
hill-side ditches were filled to overflowing.
The land being dry washed very had. The
cool weather since then has been favorable
for the hud worms, and they have not
been idle. The crows and the doves got,
their share and are waiting for the replant
to peep up. Cotton is looking bad—not

almost give up. It reminds me .of what
neighbor MoFearsou said to rni oiie’e in
speaking of his condition, lie said that
all his corn, meat and meal was all out;
land hard and plows dull, coal out, Lie

1 find * very little wheat sown in-this
county, and it is a veiy important crop
to raise. The bread from our wheat is not
so white as bought flour, 1-tit it is much
sweeter and cheaper than corn broad If
the same laud be sown ovary year, follow¬
ed with peas and the vinos tlifned under,
in a few years good crops could be grown
without the aid of any fertilizer. If Mr.
Adam Hortman would place a thresh an:’
separator to his water power it would tend
t.o encourage wheat growing in this county.
Let every man sow hi# wheat.-stack it
away, and have it threshed and ground
into lllour the same day.
As it is it is useless for ouc to saw un¬
less tiie entire community sows, the ma¬
chinery could be kept in better condition,
consequently a bettor yield of wheat, add
would result in more satisfaction

Northern capitalists havo for
years heun debating the question of using
their wealth in building cotton factories
and iron mining in the south. Probably
ignorance of the real condition and habits,
both social and politic, of the southern
l >CIJ ple, together with a lack of information
concerning tiio natural advantages of this
srction , have been about the only obsta
c ^ es ,u the way of a south-flowing tide ol
industrial investment. But within the
p3«t few years millions of northern capital
has sought investment in coal, iron and
mart,I ° n >* nin & » n Alabama and Georgia,

now competition has caused it to be
demonstrated that southern pig iron can
bo produced at a profit aud still be sold
at » price which will bankrupt the north
elT1 c^mpaniea who are engaged iu the
same kind of goods.
Aud now the eastern manufacturers
cotton goods are having their eves opened
to the fact that.potton goods arc being
made at loss cxr-stiso in the south than
at their miils. In view of this fact several
northern companies will move their cotton
mills to the south during this year, and
savers! new ones arc going to bo started
by northern men. Heretofore, . whenever
a large factory was built with the assist¬
ance of northern capital, that assistance
had to be sought. Now it seeks iuvest
meat iu the s-amo enterprises upon its own
instigation.
It requires no inspired prophetic vision
to foresee what will follow In this cli
mate this class of work can bo carried ou
every day in the year. Labor is cheaper
because the laborers’ needs can be
cheaply and more orally supplied hers
than iu any other part of the Union. The
finest water p-rtrer on earth can bo had
almost without prico aud in abundance.
These unequalled advantages will hence
forrh be utilized as they inver were before.
A manifold increase in the number
these enterprises would not tend to lessen
the profits of the business, because for
every one added to the number hi this
country wo would saore,..au equal -aiaount
of independence over the manufactories of
Europe. As the Sonth-Atlantic states
produce seven-ninths of tho cotton cron of
the whole world, it will be readily seen
that should this country mmufacture all
of its cotton product, ic would then be : in
position to dictate the juice of cotton
goods lo the nations oft’.-a word.
This will some day be tho case. CottoD
farming will yet he the greatest industry
