4 BIBLE LESSONS. LESSON FOR SUNDAY, JULY 15, 1877. TURNING TO THE GENTILES. (iolden Text. — And in his name shall the Gentiles trust. Matt. i 2: 2t. Time. — Year 45. Place.— Antioch, in Pisidia. CircnniNfiiuces. — Paul’s sermon was repeated the following Sab bath (Saturday) by special request, and multitudes came to hear it. But the Jews, seeing the great crowds, and jealous of the effect of Paul’s preaching in their own synagogue, became very abusive, contradicting Paul, and reviling him and his doctrine and Jesus. They had the notion that the Jews were a favored people, and that they were degraded by being put on a level (religiously) with the Gentile throng. “Instead of hoping and believing that many of the multitude would become proselytes to their own faith, they selfishly feared that their own importance and dignity would be lessened, if the blessings God had given them were shared by the multitude.” They raised an uproar, by their violent and abusive opposition. Paul and Barnabas, being thus rejected by the very men who had welcomed them a week before, boldly determine to let the Jews alone and preach to the Gentiles. Though expelled from the synagogue, they preach with great effect until driven from the city by persecution. SCRIPTURE LESSON:—Acts 13: 42-52. 42. And, when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath. 43. Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas; who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God. 44. And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city to gether to hear the word of God. 45. But, when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming. 46 Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bol4. Itwas neces- sary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you; but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, 10, we turn to the Gentiles. 47 For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. , , , . 48 And when the Gentiles heard th.%, they were glad, and glori- fied the word of the Lord : and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed. , ... 40. And the word of the Lord vas published throughout all the rC fo? n ßut the Jews stirred up d’ e devout and honorable women, and the chief men of the cit>> anc > raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and them out of their coasts. 51. But they shook off tlle oust of their feet against them, and cam® unto Iconium. f 52. And the dis'-P lcs were Idled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost. DAILY HOME READINGS. This verse probably means, simply, that as Paul and Barnabas went out, or were going out, those who heard them requested that the same truths be preached again, next Sabbath. V. 43. Broken up— dismissed; religious proselytes— devout, or pious prose lytes from the Gentiles—Gentile converts; continue in the grace of God —that is, submit and adhere steadfastly to the doctrines of grace, as revealed in the Gospel, rather than cling to the abolished rites of Judaism, which could not save them. (Gal. 2: 21; Titus 2:11; 1 Peter 5 : 12. ) V. 44. Whole city— all the people— this shows that the congregation was partly made up of the heathen population, which excited the jealous en mity of the strict Jews; word of God —the Gospel as preached by Paul. V. 45. Jews — zealots—those whose bigotry made them favor exclusive Judaism; filled with envy— indignation and jealousy: they regarded the priv ileges of their religion as exclusively their own, and their pride and bigotry could not endure the idea that the heathen should share those privileges; hence they not only contradicted and opposed Paul, but abused and reviled Jesus, whom Paul preached and declared to be the Son of God. (See Acts 18: 6; Luke 22: 65.) V. 46. Waxed bold —spoke out boldly and plainly; (Eph. 6: 19, 20; Phil. I: 14; I Thess. 2: 2;) necessary—ac cording to the commands of Jesus; (Matthew 10: 5,6; Rom. 1: 16; Acts 3: 26; 26: 20;) put it from you— reject it; judge yourselves unworthy— show by your words and conduct you are unworthy of the of the Gospel, (Acts 7: 21;) turn to the Gentiles— see Acts 18: 6; 28: 28; Rom. II: 11. V. 47. Command ed—to preach to the Gentiles; (Acts 1:8; 9: 15; 22: 21 ; Matt. 28: 19; Mark 16: 15;) set thee (Jesus) to be a light— see Acts 26: 23; Tsa. 42: 1,6; 49: 6; Jer. 16: 19; Psalm 22: 27, 28.) V. 48. Glorified —honored it by accepting it; ordained —appointed; (Rom. 8: 28; 9: ii; Eph. 1:4, 11; 2 Thess. 2:13; 2 Tim. 1:9; I Peter 1:2;) published— spread abroad; (Acts 19: 10, 26; Phil. 1: 13,14;) that region— Asia Minor. V. 50. Women— Gentile women of the higher classes, who had become Jewish proselytes. V. 51. Shook off the dust— in obedience to Christ and as a sign of abhorrence of their wickedness at rejecting the Gospel; (see Matt. 10: 14; Mark 6: II; Luke 9: 5; 10: II;) Iconium— a city about ninety miles southeast of Antioch. V. 52. Dis ciples—Christians at Antioch; filled with joy— because they were Christians and had the hope of salvation: they were joyful, although their beloved preachers had left them and they were liable to be persecuted. (See Matt. 5: 10-12.) They were true Christians. QUESTIONS FOR THE YOUNGEST. Let us repeat the golden text—“ And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.” In whose name? In the name of Jesus. The deacon has objected to new methods ever since.
