LITERARY NOTES
AMERICAN EDUCATION WEEK.
By Vaughn Payne, ’25.
rpHE first week of December was set aside as American Education
■*“ Week. The object of the dedication was to focus the nations
attention upon education and to make a national sentiment for the
improvement of our schools and the furtherance of our educational
aims. The entire population was asked to join in and contribute
to rjake this movement a success. An elaborate program was out
lined, furnishing each day a topic of educational value for nation
wide discussion in all gatherings.
As we emerge from this dedicated week, we feel that the
lectures and discussions have brought national benefit. We all are
aware of the fact that a popular education is essential to the suc
cess of a democratic country, for without such education come those
elenyents of retrogression and decay. Between teachers and students
there should be closer relationship built upon service. Illiteracy is
slowly disappearing, but it is evident that it requires the undivided
effort of every individual to completely abolish the appalling condi
tion.
The necessity of physical training was strongly emphasized, and
in the future greater efforts shall be made to secure for students
better physical training facilities. We are looking forward to wonder
ful improvements in consequence of this week of concentrated
thought and serious discussion on education.
