Lewis and county and city offi cials have kept me up-to date on the many activities in Perry. Phone calls have meant so much. Just hearing familiar voices has kept me feeling a part of the Perry community family. My new low-vision equip ment consists of a key board. computer, magnifi cation camera, screen (which can be split), scan ner, printer, ability to make disks or hard (paper) copy, including envelopes, ability to magnify letters and numbers up to 6"-8” on the screen and change back ground colors from white to yellow, tan, light blue and light green. It can play music or allow you to play games. I will obtain another piece of software for use with this computer which will make greeting cards. It is also capable of handling e- nail when it is installed in Perry. I jokingly say that it is Tribble and other guns not used for hunting must be stopped. Others say more gun legis lation and regulation is not the answer. Neither will prevent dangerous people bent on violence from gain ing access to a weapon. The answers, they say, are: • to leave law abiding gun owners alone, as criminal use of guns cannot be regu lated; • to encourage parents to be more involved in their children’s lives; • boycotting theaters that show violent movies; • to put prayer back in public schools. Some are saying that while reporters, parents, police, and citizens across this country, are asking why this' happened, the answer is staring us in the face, but we refuse to see it. We, the generation which preaches love and brother hood, have created a soci ety totally devoid of the veiy love we preach. We’ve created a vacuum, a moral vacuum that our children are filling with hate and violence. Some say we have ignored the signs too long. We have allowed our youth to shave their heads and salute posters of Hitler. We brush Congratulations, Darryl Albritton, newly appointed Principal to Kings Chapel Elementary School. You are a deserving and caring human being and we are so very proud of you. In addition to this renewed connection with friends and family. I have enlisted the help of mater nal and paternal cousins in furnishing me with copies of their personal history which I will edit, and pre pare final copy for consoli dation and publication. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading their histories and in preparing my own histo ry. Time flies when you are having fun! The first copies will be printed as Gaines and Lewis Family Histories. These activities have helped me to pass the time profitably while trying to mend my body, damaged by my fall. Also, this newspaper has done a great job of covering the news in south Houston County. I can hardly believe that so many changes have been made since 1 have been with my sister in Milledgeville. As citizens we should participate in career days at school, be a Big Brother/Sister, mentor the youth you hire in your business, teaching them responsibility and ethics. Finally, some citizens are saying our children con sume a steady diet of vio lence from the time they first sit in front of a televi sion. They learn that in our society conflict is resolved with superior firepower. The entertainment industry seems to believe that firearm violence is just another form of entertain ment. They glamorize it and raakfcrit seem normal; Perhaps there is a bit of truth that can be taken from what each of our citi zens across this nation is saying. Perhaps those in positions of leadership will evaluate the truths that come from these state ments and formulate a plan that will help to curb inci dents such as the one at Columbine High School. Meanwhile, as we look back on the terrible event, we can truly say, what a tragic day. jmUf bhqOt Serving Middle Georgia since 1982 Our brother, Jimmy Lewis, a former resident of Perry and now lives in Pawley's Island, S.C. will visit us May 14-17. She’s here to help our mer chants promote their busi nesses. I believe they’ll find her helpful and reliable in her work. Also joining the staff is an old friend. Torey Jolley worked in the newsroom with me 10 years ago. After getting her feet wet in this business, Torey decided to return to school and finish her undergraduate degree in English at Mercer. She’s been working in another field for the past five years, and when she had an opportunity to return to the newspaper business, she jumped at the opportunity. I'm delighted to have Torey back on our team. She will be with us in just a few days and will be work ing with the education and city beats. Have a news suggestion? Give her a call.
