Steel Magnolias draws strong praise from HHJ reviewer Br CHARLOTTE PERKINS a cast! The Peny Players' produc tion of “Steel Magnolias" is one of their finest produc tions yet bringing to the stage the kind of magic that happens when the play rings true and the cast is Just right. In the first place. Robert Harling’s play is a gem. Set entirety in Truvy’s beauty parlor in Chinquapin, La., it has a cast of Just six women, but an unseen cast that’s much larger including husbands past and present, sons, relatives and even a neurotic off-stage dog. The humor in the play, while very funny, is still the humor of real people —never slapstick or contrived, and ■? ijp < ■■ '■ SB 3 x** jHUh^ B[ jHS yngjgßj . iMlWrlrb : . -A .A - special i*noto THE CAST - Front row, from left, Teresa Mosley, Nelda Tawse, Rebecca Archer; back row: Gale Weems, Wanda Goolsby and Katy Bailey. He also said that the school’s staff will be work ing closely with Middle Georgia Technical Institute. “We want to get as many as possible into the tech school, “ he said. “Job mar kets are changing and skilled workers are making big money. We think this is a great opportunity, a total package thatjwill serve the needs of the students, increase graduation rates and help the economy.” To be accepted for the HCCTC program, students must apply and go through an interview process. Director Joy Goodman had very good material to work with. She also chose a first rate cast. First ( because the laughs realty do outweigh the tears in this movie) there are not enough positive adjectives to cover the comic perfor mances of Nelda Tawse as Clairee and Gale Weems as Ouiser two great south ern classics: older women who say just about anything they happen to think. Clairee, who loves gossip but has a generous spirit when it comes to the foibles of oth ers. is putting her life back together after the death of Requirements include the following: Students must be residents of Houston County, at least 16 years of age and must have completed one year of high school. Ouiser (pro nounced “Weezer") , who is more eccentric than Clairee, but also possibly not as tough as she seems, is at war with the whole world, but especially with M’tynn's husband and the Baptist Church. Tawse and Weems are two very funny actresses, and for those who have seen the movie, Tawse’s portrayal of Clairee may come as a real surprise. (Otympia Dukakis just was not that funny in the role. Tawse is hilarious.) On the serious side, Rebecca Archer gives a sen sitive and intelligent por trayal of Shelby, M’Lynn’s fragile and stubborn diabet ic daughter who starts out struggling for her indepen dence and winds up making decisions with a very heavy price. Teresa Mosley is wonder ful as M’Lynn, a mother who has raised her daughter to be independent and now is fighting a losing battle to keep her daughter alive. Mosley meets the challenge of playing an entirety serious role in the midst of comedy and quite truly takes over the theatre when she finally explodes in the climactic moment of the last act Wandy Goolsby’s interpre tation of Truvy, the beauty parlor owner, is a sheer delight. Truvy’s home life may not live up to her expec tations, but when it comes to hair - and to human rela tions - she’s an expert. Goolsby plays the role with warmth .wit , a dancer’s grace and a lot of good humor. Katy Bailey, a college sophomore, is impressive as Annelle- starting out as the comically awkward and ter rified new employee with dark secrets to keep, and winding up with a strong sense of her own identity, able to stand her ground as a born-again Christian despite the others’ raised eyebrows. Annelle is also the only one who can really is a tricky role and Bailey handles it beautifully. She's a fine young actress. “Steel Magnolias" was produced by Rita Schubbe, who brought everything together nicety for a very professional presentation, with help from some dedi cated volunteers, notably Tom Saul, who was set con struction manager. Noah looked up and smiled. “You mean you are not going to destroy the world?" he asked hopefully. “No," said the Lord, “the government already has." Good food for thought. Government laws and regu lations can be overbearing to us all. In fact, some are downright ridiculous and near an impossibility to com ply with. The following story pretty well sums up die feelings of many of us. This preacher went to the legislature to open the morning session with prayer. Disease manage ment first consists of identifying what diseases are present and the level of pressure, then determining the best control method for correcting die problems. Scouting fields to monitor disease levels and keeping accurate records of the diseases found is important. A field history is critical since diseases can occur year after year. Agronomic control methods, such as crop rotation, planting resistant varieties and crop residue destruction, help limit disease-causing organisms. Combining agronomic practices with an effective fungicide program will further reduce pathogen levels and increase your chances for profitable production. BRAVO ULTREX* and ABOUND* fungicides are important to an integrated disease management program. The powerful preventative activity of Bravo Ukrex and die combination of preventative and curative activities of Abound provide highly effective control against diseases Uke: • Early and late Icafspot • Rhizoctonia limb, peg and pod rot • White mold/stem rot. University and on-form field trials have shown that Abound in combi nation with Bravo consistently boosts yield and quality over a Folicui* pro gram. In fact, in on-form, side-by-side comparison trials, the Abound/Biavo full-season program outyielded the Folicur program by 300 pounds and improved grades by 2 points. Begin with a Bravo Ultrex appli ,, jf aup ft control of foliar diseases, Subsequent applications should be made at 10- to 14-day intervals. Substitute Abound for Bravo Ultrex for control of sotl bome diseases at approximately 60 and 90 days after planting. The combination of Abound and Bravo Ultrex can deliver higher yielding, higher-quality peanuts, and that means a more profitable peanut crop.
