Michael Walton, a fifth
grader at Kings Chapel
Elementary School, recent
ly won “Best in Discipline"
at the Georgia social sci
ence fair for his project.
“Kudzu - friend or foe?"
His display showed a
wide variety of uses for
kudzu, including erosion
prevention and art objects
made with kudzu vines. He
used the project to explain
some of the problems
caused by the fast-growing
plant. He also provided
information on the history
of the plant.
The competition was held
at Clayton State College
near Atlanta April 17.

Summer’s almost here, and parents
will be looking for wholesome activi
ties for their children. Here are some
special events and field trips planned
by the Perry Recreation Department.
The trips will be taken by bus,
enrollment is limited to 50, so call
988-2860 right away to sign up.
• Chehaw Wild Animal Park, June
18, 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. This day includes
adventuring out to the Wild Animal
Park, which features more than 160
native and exotic wildlife in a natural
setting.
Two programs will cover “Scales,
Feathers and Fur" and “Reptiles."
There will also be a river cruise.
Children should bring a sack lunch, a
camera and sun block. The cost is
$lO.
• Fishing for Fun, June 26, 10 a.m.
until noon. A non-competitive fishing
rodeo held at the large pavilion in J.
Frank Rozar Park, this event is free of
charge with hot-dogs and soft drinks
provided to all participants. A few
fishing poles are available at the
Recreation Department. Bait is sup
plied.

- 7 p.m. Children will visit the nation’s
largest tropical butterfly conservatory.
This fun-packed day will include train
rides, paddle boats, swimming, putt
putt golf and more.
Children should ring a sack lunch,
camera, swimsuit, towel and sun
block. For ages 7 and older. The cost
is $lO.
• Nature Day at Lunar Lake, July
29. 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. This program
includes a visit to the Nature Center
at Robins Air Force Base, hiking trails
and a cookout.
After lunch participants will make
bug cages at the nature center. Pre
registration is required. Children
must be age 7 or older. The cost is

fil-A college scholarship.
A rising sophomore at
Georgia College and State
University, Rood accepted
the Truett Cathy Scholar
Award for 1999.
The award is one of the
25 nationwide winners of
the awards presented in
honor of S. Truett Cathy,
founder of the Chick-fil-A
restaurant chain.
These 25 students were

graduation.
