*Be open and honest with
your people and expect the
same from them. Secrets
and dishonesty destroy
teams. If they are going to
work with you to accomplish
a project, then you need to
put all the cards on the
table. A
the same time, they need
to share theirs.
•Emphasize loyalty. Loy
alty from followers begins to
develop when you are loyal
to them. Talking behind
their backs or siding with
someone against them even
before hearing their side ot
the story are a couple of
non-loyal actions. Stand up
for them until they
absolutely give you no rea
son to do so.
•Help your followers to
discover, develop and use
their strengths and abilities
wisely. Ninety-nine percent
of all people want to do
something that matters,
something that makes a
* positive difference, some
thing that provides a signifi
cant contribution. That’s
where you come in. It is
your responsibility to help
them do this.
•Appreciate your people
and show this appreciation
in various ways. Honest
praise and recognition is
one of the greatest motiva
tors of all time. I’m con
stantly amazed at the num
ber of would-be leaders who
can’t bring themselves to
say such things as “Thank
y0u...1 appreciate what you
did... Great job.” When sin
cerely said, these brief
acknowledgements are pow
erful. Also, being polite to
people is a motivator. Just
saying, “Please," increases
camaraderie and morale.
•Get excited about what
you are doing-or quit doing
it. When you are excited,
people around you catch the
excitement. Boredom is also
contagious. I’ve never yet
seen a drab manager, super
visor or coach get the most
from their people. At the
same time, I have seen dull
leaders put dampers and
lids on their followers.
•Enjoy yourself, enjoy
others and enjoy what you
are doing. Don’t be afraid to
