Obituaries Tom Chapman Tom Chapman. 76. of 1911 Main St.. Perry, died May 29. 1999, at his home. Funeral services were held May 31 at the First Baptist Church of Pern', with the Rev. Dr. Randv Kennedy and Elder Gordon Buchanan officiating. Bur ial was in Pern Memorial Gardens. A life-long resident of Perry. Mr. Chapman was owner of Chapman Con struction. a realtor and an investor. He was a member of First Baptist Church. Sun'ivors include his wife. Mae Dupuy Chapman, his brothers. Harris Chap man. Bill Chapman and Howell Chapman, his sister Mary Becham, all of Perry, and a number of nieces and nephews. Watson-Hunt Funeral Home had charge of arrangements. Mary Miller Heaherlin Mary Miller Heaberlin. 89. of 703 Hillcrest Ave.. Perry, died May 25 at the Perry Hospital. Graveside senices were May 28 at Pern Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Deny Oliver and the Rev. Dr. David L t alter officiat ing. Mrs. Heaberlin moved here from lronton. Ohio, where she was employed by Dayton Malebale Iron Co. for 30 years. She was a member of Crossroads United Methodist Church and the AARP, and was a former Pink l^ady. Sun'ivors include her daughter. Faye Craft of Perry; a son. Robert Heaberlin of Centerville; two sisters. Beatrice Williams of Cleveland. Ohio, and Hazel Marcum of 1 ron ton; 11 grandchildren. 28 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great -grandchild. According to Marcia Harpster. children’s librari an, “We want everyone to come in to get books to read and enjoy " The reading club and activities began June 1 and continue through Aug 7 There will be arts and crafts, entertainers, movies, and story-telling. Story times are Tuesdays at 10 a.m. for pre-K to sec ond graders. ' Born in Dooly County. Mr. had lived in Perry’ since 1958. He was retired from the City of Perry Water Works Depart ment. Alice McWhirt Mangum Alice McWhirt Mangum. 87, of 1026 Keith Drive, died May 29 at the Elberta Health Care Center in Cen terville. Services were private. The burial was in the Park lawn Cemetery in Wheaton. Md. Born in Stafford County, Va., Mrs. Mangum was the daughter of John and Alice McWhirt and a former resi dent of Autumn Terrace and Kensington. Md. She was a homemaker, a Protes tant. and the widow of Percy G. Mangum. Survivors include her daughter. Joan Evans of Warner Robins; a son. Paul G. Mangum of Derry’. N.H.; two sisters. McDaniel Losia Cook Ellison McDaniel, 78. of Meeting Street. Perry, died May 29. 1999. in Brunswick. Ga. Services were held June 1, at the First Baptist Church of Perry, with the Rev. Dr. Randy Kennedy officiating. Burial was in Perry Memorial Gardens. Mrs. McDaniel was born in Macon County and had lived in Perry’ most of her iife. She was the former owner of the L&J Superette Market and was a member of First Baptist Church. She was the widow of at 11 a.m. Ventriloquist Bob Abdou is scheduled for June 23 at 10:30 a.m. Lloyd Sherod will present “Fun with Food” on June 30 at 11 a.m The excitement is expected to be high when the Shonev Bear goes to the library. He will be there on July 15 at 11 a.m. Julv 19. the library will be the place to be at 2 p.m. John Cooper the Magician will perform at that time. “It will be lots of fun. Richard Ray Richard Ray. former U.S. Congressman and former Mayor of the City of Perry, died May 29. 1999, at the age of 72. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., June 2, in the Perry United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at 12:30 p.m. at the church follow ing the service. A native of Fort Valley and former resident Rep. Ray was a graduate of Roberta High School and the University of Georgia. While living in Perry, he was a councilman for two terms and then mayor. He was also president of the Perry Jaycees and presi dent of the Georgia Munici pal Association. He served for 10 years as Senator Sam Nunn’s administrative assistant and was elected to Con gress in 1982. He repre sented Georgia as a senior member of the Armed Ser vices Committee. Following his years in Congress, he operated a consulting business in Alexandria, Va. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Giles Ray; his children. Barbara Ray of Cambridge, Mass., Charles Ray of Alexandria, Va., and Alan Ray of Kathleen; brothers and sister, James Ray of Chattanooga, Tenn. Rep.
