Fishermen share secrets on where to find Lake Jackson hybrids (EDITOR S NOTE: This is the second in a series of stories by John Trussell about fishing opportunities in the mid state. This week, Trussell reports on Lake Jackson.) .Just as tilt* early morn ing • haze was clearing off the lake surface, the action started. Like popcorn lumping off a hot pan, the shad began leaping into the air in all directions, franti cally attempting to elude their pursuers below the surface. Like herded cattle in a pen, the shad were cor nered and encircled by the hungry hybrids below. The water boiled and popped as the hybrids fed with gusto. Journal Staff First grade students at Tucker Elemen tary got a rare treat May 27 when Perry High School Senior Jeb Stewart demon strated several points of Tae Kwon Do. Stewart said he wanted to give the chil dren an overview of his favorite sport to ready them for their June 2 Sports Day. According to Dee Hayes, a Tucker first grade teacher, “We have asked various peo ple in different types of sports to come and talk about their sport so the children can see there are more sports than baseball and football.” Stewart, a fourth degree black belt, explained the various stages of Tae Kwon Do. He said the beginners really work on stances and movements. Only when some one reaches the stage of red belt does one begin to break boards. “It helps with discipline. It teaches Yes, Sir; No, Sir, " stated Stewart, adding Tae Kwon Do also teaches respect. The little faces watched intently as Stew art explained and then demonstrated each movement stances, punches, and kicks. Stewart told the youngsters, “We always take our shoes off before entering the stu dio. We bow and then we get into our ready position." Kersey said that Neil Eamhart and Paul Yancey are two of the most avid hybrid fishermen on the lake, and yes, confirms Earnhart, “1 go every chance 1 get in the sum mertime, usually at least 2 - 3 times per week." Earnhart is a retired cor rectional officer with the Georgia Department of Cor rections. Yancey, age 76 is also retired and is Earn hart’s frequent fishing com panion. Earnhart said the best opportunity for Lake Jack son’s hybrids occur in late June or the first of July when the fish start busting shad on the surface. “You don’t have to guess where the fish are then, said Earnhart because of four shut-out innings on the mound. He gave up one hit and had seven strike outs for Alltel. Bake Yarbrough of Alltel had a game-winning double, an RBI and he scored two runs as Alltel downed MMM. 4-2. Timmy McCoy led MMM with two singles and a dou ble. He scored twice. Jeff Barfield had a single, a double and an RBI. In the second game. Michael Deibert was the inning pitcher for Tolleson. Stewart learned Tae Kwon Do from the Perry Athletic Karate studio. He has been studying the martial art for 11 years. Between the applause and shouts of awe, Stewart told the youngsters that “visualizing himself breaking the boards" prior to actually do it, is very important. The afternoon exhibit brought loud cheers. Stewart performed a running jump kick- flying over a chair and breaking a board with a kick.
