Kiwanians get taste of life in Saudia Arabia By JOAN DORSETT Hour JouttHAL Staff Perry Kiwanians were enlightened on what it's like to live in Saudi Arabia by one of their own, Jim McCown, at the June 8 meeting at New Perry Hotel. A two-year job in 1985 got extended every two years until the 35-year Perry residents had been there 12 years. McCown reported. He gave a colorful report of the growth and newness of everything, no fear at all. no prejudice, two distinc tive tribes of sunnies and sheiks, 70 fields of oil. largest sand desert where dunes move daily, oases, fabulous compounds and villas. Kiwanians viewed items McCown brought home with him: a prayer carpet, dessert rose antiquitiy and coins. They even got to taste fresh dates. Jim and Ruth McCowns’ daughter. Dee, a 1981 Westfield graduate and the second Miss Westfield, and her children Megan, 2, and Foster. 5. who are residents of Alkhobar are visiting them for two months and brought the dates. The three are enjoying being back in Perry and will visit Dee's sister Debbie and Ed Pierce in Overland Park, Kan. next week. Debbie and Ed's son Matthew is 21 and gradu ating UCLA summa cum laude in pre law. Benjamin is 18 and Amy is 15. Jim Matheson of Boeing in Saudi will join his family in Perrv June 25 thru July 15. ' Medical retirement in 1998 has Jim and Ruth now settled in their reno vated Northside Road home. They look forward to returning to Saudi Arabia at intervals. * Georgia Peach Festival to be held June 18-20 The Georgia Peach Festival, celebrating Peach County’s 75th anniversary, will be held in Byron and Fort Valley from June 18 through June 20.
