Tourism panel preparing for Big Bang Boom By ROB MEAD "TMgffiflSLh. Ueorffa National Fairgrounds Director and members of a special Perry Convention and Visitors Bureau sub committee have worked out a funding formula to make Big Bang Boom admission free this year. In addition, the Perry CVB will make a SIO,OOO donation to the July 3 entertainment to under write the cost of fireworks. That contribution, cou pled with sponsorships from the city of Perry, Con cessions by Cox. Best Country' FM 105 WDEN and Channel 13 WMAZ, mean visitors to the day long Independence celebra tion will pay nothing for admission. “It's a way for the Agri center and the sponsors to say thank you to the com munity," Froehlich said. “This is a community based team effort to benefit those families and individ uals who have supported city of Perry and Agricenter events.” Gates to the Agricenter will open at 11:30 a.m. July 3 for various food eat ing contests, games, kiddie rides, free local entertain ment. some arts and crafts and food. Fireworks will fill the sky about 9:45 p.m. Froehlich said Big Bang Boom is a family-oriented event and no alcohol will be allowed. Froehlich requested SIO,OOO from the CVB to cover the cost of the Inde pendence Day fireworks show. Previous fireworks dis plays held at the Agricenter were presented by Cox Concessions according to Froehlich. “This year being the last year of the millennium, we want to do something a lit tle different and really big" said Froehliofv. :tv Froehlich said “my goal for this year’s Big Bang Boom event is to receive a SIO,OOO sponsorship. I want to have the largest fireworks display ever and do it without charging the public anything”. CVB board members unanimously approved the funding for the Big Bang Boom event during the monthly CVB meeting. Jenny Andrew, Conven tion and Visitor Bureau director, not only found a way to delegate the funds for the event but turned this into a win-win situa tion for Perryans. Also mentioned during the CVB meeting: V According to Froehlich, the National High School Rodeo Association finals will be held in Gillette, Wyo. this year. Froehlich and another board member, from the CVB, possibly Jenny Andrew, will attend the event with hopes of bringing the event to the Agricenter in the future. V Members of the Perry Chamber of Commerce will conduct a membership drive June 10-21. Volun teers are needed to help with the drive. Elizabeth Flowers is the Chairperson for the drive. V Wal-Mart will open for business July 1 according to Chris Kinnas V The Bicycle Ride Across Georgia (BRAG) will arrive in Perry June 22. ab but noon. As many as 2,500 bicy clists will enter Perry from the west and spent the evening at Perry High School, The riders will enter town along U.S. 341 from Fort Valley, and follow Sam Nunn Boulevard to Perime ter Road.' They will leave from Perry High the next morning. During the evening hours, members of the local band Jefferson Blue will perform at the high school.
