By ROB MEAD

National Fairgrounds
Director and members of a
special Perry Convention
and Visitors Bureau sub
committee have worked out
a funding formula to make
Big Bang Boom admission
free this year.
In addition, the Perry
CVB will make a SIO,OOO
donation to the July 3
entertainment to under
write the cost of fireworks.
That contribution, cou
pled with sponsorships
from the city of Perry, Con
cessions by Cox. Best
Country' FM 105 WDEN
and Channel 13 WMAZ,
mean visitors to the day
long Independence celebra
tion will pay nothing for
admission.
“It's a way for the Agri
center and the sponsors to
say thank you to the com
munity," Froehlich said.
“This is a community
based team effort to benefit
those families and individ
uals who have supported
city of Perry and Agricenter
events.”
Gates to the Agricenter
will open at 11:30 a.m.
July 3 for various food eat
ing contests, games, kiddie
rides, free local entertain
ment. some arts and crafts
and food. Fireworks will fill
the sky about 9:45 p.m.
Froehlich said Big Bang
Boom is a family-oriented
event and no alcohol will be
allowed.
Froehlich requested
SIO,OOO from the CVB to
cover the cost of the Inde
pendence Day fireworks
show.
Previous fireworks dis
plays held at the Agricenter
were presented by Cox
Concessions according to
Froehlich.
“This year being the last
year of the millennium, we
want to do something a lit
tle different and really big"
said Froehliofv. :tv
Froehlich said “my goal
for this year’s Big Bang
Boom event is to receive a
SIO,OOO sponsorship. I
want to have the largest
fireworks display ever and
do it without charging the
public anything”.
CVB board members
unanimously approved the
funding for the Big Bang
Boom event during the
monthly CVB meeting.
Jenny Andrew, Conven
tion and Visitor Bureau
director, not only found a
way to delegate the funds
for the event but turned
this into a win-win situa
tion for Perryans.
Also mentioned during
the CVB meeting:
V According to Froehlich,
the National High School
Rodeo Association finals
will be held in Gillette,
Wyo. this year. Froehlich
and another board member,
from the CVB, possibly
Jenny Andrew, will attend
the event with hopes of
bringing the event to the
Agricenter in the future.
V Members of the Perry
Chamber of Commerce will
conduct a membership
drive June 10-21. Volun
teers are needed to help
with the drive. Elizabeth
Flowers is the Chairperson
for the drive.
V Wal-Mart will open for
business July 1 according
to Chris Kinnas
V The Bicycle Ride
Across Georgia (BRAG) will
arrive in Perry June 22. ab

As many as 2,500 bicy

The riders will enter
town along U.S. 341 from
Fort Valley, and follow Sam
Nunn Boulevard to Perime
