Kiwanians learn about Middle Georgia By JOAN DORSETT H °?te\Tlofanidian. President ot Middle Georgia Col lege at Cochran, spoke to Perry Kiwanis Club June 15. He and Coach Randy Pippin, Athletic Director, were introduced by member Earl Cheek who attended the school in 1933. Maradian, on board since March, gave interesting statistics about the oldest 2-year institution in the country starting out as Baptist Ebenezer College, turning into an A&M school in 1932 to the present part of the university system. MGC has the highest transfer rate of 2-year colleges in the country with students going on to Georgia Tech, the Universities of Georgia and Florida, Florida State, Valdosta State, and Georgia Southern. The school also prepares students to work for the 11 mil itary bases in Georgia. Its future is tied to leadership in the community with a planned powerhouse economic development center in Talmadge Hall with a $2.2 million renova - The Economic Development Center will benefit the bordering counties of Bleckley, Twiggs, Wilkinson, Houston. Pulaski. Dodge and Laurens.. It will work with those counties and communities to address the economic problems due to lack of education which is the lowest in the nation and at the bottom in educa tional performance, where per capita income is below average and $1.2 billion per year is not coming into the area because of this degradation. The Economic Development Center leadership wants to take leadership, be a hub in this region for development, the place in this area. By 2003 MGC hopes to have 2.000 resident stu dents with 3.000 at the Dublin campus. MGC is look ing forward to several exciting years with deferred maintenance to be completed, new partner with Geor gia Southern University at Dublin, installing football stadium lighting, a Region Wellness Center, dormitory renovation. Walker Hall renovation, a new building in Dublin. Mike Drake introduced guest Sara Muse who recently retired from teaching 25 years at The West field Schools. 34 years total. Bill Hafley introduced guests Emily Johnstone of the Town Crier and intern Gary Hardin of Georgia College and State University. School system complies with asbestos law Special to the Home Journal The Houston County School System announced it is in compliance with the federal regulations con cerning the Asbestos Haz ard Response Act . To meet the require ments for these regula tions, all Houston County schools mu si be re-inspect ed for all friable and non friable asbestos-containing materials by an accredited inspector. In addition, an Asbestos Management Plan must be updated by an accredited planner and submitted to the Georgia State Department of Edu cation by July 9, 2001. A copy of this Asbestos Management Plan is locat ed in each school office and available for public viewing. Volunteer Houston Coun ty offers opportunities Volunteer Houston County offers volunteer opportunities for teens ages 13-19 for the summer. These include volunteer positions for junior pet therapists, day camp assis tant counselors, teachers' assistants, water safety aides, activity assistants for senior citizens, arts and crafts instructors, field trip counselors for one day excursions with local recre ation department, summer reading corps tutors. The guest speaker was George Stew art, president of the Stew art Consulting Group of Dun woody, who gave a pre sentation on character education in public and private schools. Highlights of the evening including the passing of the president's gavel from William Jackson to Ken Granger, the presentation of awards to the Rotarian of the Year and the Public Safety Officer of the Year, and the announcement of new officers.
