Twenty-five percent of their salaries will be paid from the grant for three years. The third officer will be funded by the COPS in School grant. The officer will work in Perry High School. The school resource officer pay will be funded fully by the grant for three years. The Houston County School Board will fund the officer’s salary in the fourth year. Only the training, uni forms, and equipment would be cost for the city of Perry. That, according to Potter, is estimated to be SIO,OOO. When they take photos of a home or business burning, they in all probability know those affected. When they write an obit uary, chances are pretty good they know the person well. When unpleasant sto ries come from city hall, county commission or school board, or whatever has to be written, they very well could involve stories about i someone who attends their church, or is a member of their civic club. Folks, it’s an awesome responsibility to publish a community newspaper whose goal is to produce a quality product which you will be proud of, and a product dedicated toward printing the truth fairly and unbiased. But you can rest assured that is the goal of your newspaper manager and staff, A friend of mine who is in the newspaper business in a much larger way than we uses the slogan, “strong newspapers build strong communities." Think about it. That is a very truthful statement. Newspapers which take the lead in their communities for what is good, and take a firm stand against what is bad, can do nothing but help build strong commu nities. We trust we are doing that in every commu nity we serve. The request was from sev eral business owners in the vicinity along Interstate 75 at Exit 42 near Best West ern, Cracker Barrel, Waffle House, and Travelodge. Public Works Superin tendent Hugh Sharp reviewed the request but “found the area in compli ance with the city’s policy." In connection with the Continued from page 4A Let me assure you there is no other media which cares more about this com munity than your commu nity newspaper, the Hous ton Home Journal. If you don’t believe that, compare the local news in the issue of the newspaper you now hold in your hands to any other media which covers news in your community, be it the nearby daily, cable television, radio or shopper news. Yes, we might have the daily break a story on us on occasion, since most of us only come out weekly, but when you read our in-depth story you will be proud of the manner in which it was handled as well as the detail. An elderly gentleman around town told me on more than one occasion, “I have heard all the news before your paper comes out, but I read it anyway to verify what I heard was true." That’s a good compli ment for a community newspaper. Finally, your Home Jour nal staff has chosen to live in this community for a number of reasons. They love the people, churches, schools, values, and many other benefits which com munity living affords. They enjoy the connection this newspaper has with its community and accept proudly the responsibilities which go along with that relationship. More later on community newspapers and our mis sion or goal. The city has been unable to acquire right-of-way from Ethel M. Thomas, Carlton Griffin, Lewis Lester, and Fannie Jenkins Toomer. Other business awaiting the council's attention were a concerned citizens' group against a cement plant being built along their neighbor- Cable for any unpaid franchise fees, as well as provide a $50,000 performance bond by which the city can col lect jhe franchise fee should Suntel not meet its obligation. Walker responded, “That is 5 to 6 pages. I am not prepared to read them here. I will need at least a day to do so.” GMA recommendations to the city included a SIOO,OOO performance bond, a resolution linking BG Media as well as assets if Suntel fails to pay fran chise fees as agreed. Macke said, “I have questions about the finan cial condition of Suntel. I thought it would be in the best interest of the city if those questions were cleared up before proceed ing." Macke said, “Suntel began in December 1998. It is a wholly owned sub sidiary of BG Media. Some documents show Suntel is Jolley white mice and birds. A couple of years ago, I had enough of animals in my house. I declared, “No more of anything that eats and drinks.” Easter came. While I was out, my daugh ter sneaked in a box. A small duckling was inside. When I discovered the duck, I was in a foul mood (pun intended). My daugh ter soon saw the error in her judgment though. Athena was thrilled. Lunch in a box deliv ered! My daughter thought Athena was just loving the little duckling. I told her that licking Athena was doing was not loving; it was tasting. No sooner did I say those words than have you seen the Sylvester the Cat and Tweety Bird car toons? Athena gobbled the duckling up in one bite. Don’t panic here. Noth ing was injured.
