NEW IN TOWN The
Rev. Bill Strickland is the
new pastor of Perry United
Methodist Church.
Strickland named
Perry United
Methodist pastor
By CHARLOTTE PERKINS
A new pastor has arrived
at Perry United Methodist
Church.
The Rev. Bill Strickland,
who formerly served for 10
years as pastor of Vidalia
United Methodist Church,
moved to Perry on June 22
with his wife, Lynn.
A native of Waycross,
Strickland has been in the
ministry for 28 years. He
attended Young Harris Col
lege and Asbury College in
Kentucky as an undergrad
uate and later earned his
master's in divinity at the
Candler School of Theolo
gy. Emory University.
In addition to serving in
Vidalia, he has been pastor
of St. John’s United
Methodist Church, where
he served for nine years.
Prior to that he served
United Methodist churches
in Talbotton, Tennille and
Stapleton.
The Stricklands have two *
grown daughters Jen
nifer, who is a math
instructor at Darton Col
lege, and Leslie, who teach
es social studies in Baxley.
“The people here in Perry
have been very gracious,”
Strickland said. “They’ve
brought food and desserts
and dropped by to visit,
and they held a welcome
reception Sunday after
noon.”
He said that while he
would miss his church
"family" in Vidalia, he is
looking forward to getting
to know the Perry congre
gation.
“You become part of peo
ple's lives, and there’s
always a sadness in leav
ing,” he said, “but 1 am
looking forward to building
the kind of loving relation
ship here. I know how
much they loved and
appreciated (former Perry
UMC pastor) Marcus and
Jan Tripp."
He also noted that “The
Perry church has a reputa
tion for being a strong
United Methodist Church."
In his leisure time.
Strickland is a runner
“for pleasure and fitness”,
and has taken part in the
Peachtree 10K Road Race
in the past.
His wife, Lynn, enjoys
gardening and refinishing
furniture, he said.
