Hummingbirds, Callaway make for great summer fun The hummingbird nest ing season is coming to an endso you should begin to see more hummers around your feeders now. » Some birds may continue to nest for a second time before the summer is over. Early nesters were spotted gathering delicate filaments of spider webs as early as April. Hummers also gather lichens, plant scales and dandelion down to con struct walnut-sized nests woven with spider web silk. “One of the reasons peo ple do not see many hum mers during the nesting season is because female birds spend 18-19 hours each day in incubating eggs,” said Terry Johnson, manager of the Georgia Nongame -Endangered Wildlife Program. Even so, the number of hummingbirds seen at home feeders in Georgia has been higher in May and early June for the past two years. Sightings may increase at home feeders if dry conditions continue. In favorable weather, abundant flowers provide a ready supply of nectar. Therefore, hummingbirds will depend more on home feeders. An ideal feeding solution is comparable to sugar levels in nectar. To make a nourishing solution, combine one part sugar to four parts water. Boil for approximately four minutes; cool before filling the feeders and refrigerate the unused batch. It is important to wash feeders and freshen supplies of sugar -water mixtures at least every three or four days in hot weather. One of the best ways to attract hummingbirds to your yard is to use a combi nation of feeders and plants. Using groupings of plants, rather than a single scattering of one or two plants. The larger mass of flowers is piore likely to draw a winged visitor into view. “Select a variety of nec tar-producing annuals and perennials to ensure a food source throughout most of the year," said Johnson, a licensed bander who has tagged hummingbirds dur ing eveiy month of the year. The earliest-known male ruby-throated flyers came through the southern part of Georgia on March 18 and the midstate on March 29. Ruby-throated humming bird sightings usually increase in July and contin ue through early Septem ber, when juveniles are feeding and other migrants are flying through the southeast. Population numbers in Georgia usually peak from the end of August through the first two weeks of Sep tember then dwindle and disappear as these long-dis tance flyers migrate to win tering grounds in southern Mexico. Sometimes a few birds are seen moving southward in October, but rarely later in the fall. For a list of plants to attract hummingbirds, send a business-sized, self addressed, stamped enve lope to the Nongame- Endangered Wildlife Pro gram, 116 Rum Creek Drive. Forsyth, Ga., 31209. Funding for publications about hummingbirds and other nongame species is generated by the sale of wildlife conservation license plates. ••• - Meanwhile, try a Call away vacation.
