Those schools have until July 27 to file an appeal over the proposed realignment. Classification is based on enrollment, with a school having the option of playing in a high er, but not lower, classifi cation. With this in mind, schools in Macon have decided it will be best to drop down and play in their assigned classifica tions, meaning Central, Southwest and Northeast will all drop from their pre vious AAAA regions. All had chosen to play in a higher classification than their assigned one. Southwest will play in class AAA, while the two others will drop all the way to AA. Therein lies the realignment problems. It makes for a lot of AA schools in middle Georgia, and has prompted a major revamping of that classifi cation. Both Perry and Macon County in AA could be affected by the changes. In the same region for just two years, the schools never had an opportunity to develop what could have been a natural rival ry- #tOOO>^w^v CJ?£D/r f' cash loans on car titles Friendly, courteous staff, fast service, easy qualify /Ace Title Pawn Inc. 1716 Wataon Blvd. Warner Robin* • 912-329-1999 Phil □ark Home Journal Sports Perry returns to an old region, as far as region name is concerned, but 3AA takes on a different look beginning with the 2000-2001 school year. Perry, Dodge County, Bleckley County and West Laurens return. The new makeup of the region will be interesting. Remaining in 3AA will be Harlem, Jefferson County and Laney from the Augusta area, as well as Swainsboro. East Lau rens returns from class A. Subdivision of the region seems likely, espe cially for basketball and other sports in which more than one game per week are played. Sub-divi sion seems feasible for football, too. Gone will be rivalries between Perry and the likes of Mary Persons, Jackson and Manchester in football. Manchester will drop back to class A, while the others will wel come new region members like Central Macon, North east Macon and Callaway. Page 6A -Wed., July 7,1999 Southeast Macon, Pike County and Lamar County also remain in this region, and there will be a new school, Spalding County, in the cast as well. Macon County will be in yet another region, lAA, meaning members of last year’s 3AA end up in three different regions in realignment! Macon Coun ty leaves one of the tough est class AA regions in the state, and goes to one that could be even tougher. Region lAA fields the likes of Mitchell-Baker, Early County, Americus, Thomasville, and Brooks County, all of which have either won, or been in the hunt for state champi onships in recent years. The reclassification also means Westside Macon will be the only remaining class AAAA school in Macon. Westside will remain in 2AAAA, along with Warner Robins, Northside, Houston Coun ty, Baldwin County and Evans. Joining the region will be several members on the old 4AAAA, including Griffin, Newnan, East Coweta. LaGrange and Carver-Columbus. Hard awray of Columbus moves up to AAAA, and will also join this region. Reclassification is based on enrollment, and there’s not much the GHSA can do about that. Gene Dukes at Watson-Hunt Funeral Home L 987-2423 JWn Home Journal assigned to AAAA, 25 per cent to both AAA and AA, and 30 percent to A. Granting requests to play up in classification changes the figures only slightly. But the realignment is something the GHSA has to work very hard on. It is an extremely difficult job to place the schools in regions which don't cause hardships for members. The geographical loca tion of the schools in each classification often makes such inconveniences unavoidable. For example, had region 4AA been left as it was, it would have been next to impossible to group the remaining AA schools in this area. So consequently, half the members of 4AA went west, the other half went east. The constantly changing makeup of school enroll ment makes the GHSA’s job even tougher. There will be some complaints, but for the most part, schools just accept the realignment and move on. Anyway, we’ve got a year to go under the pre sent setup, so there will be football games at Maiy Persons and Harris Coun ty this season, and Macon County, Lamar County and Southeast wrill be coming to Perry. After that... get out your road maps! Special Photo BASEBALL CHAMPS The 11-12 year old tourna ment championship game was recently sponsored by the Perry Recreation Department.
