Store Manager Derek Bennett, along with others sent in by the company to help get the new store started, have been on the Job full time since Wal-Mart took pos session of the new building on St. Patrick’s Drive in mid-June. Jolley Continued from page 4A Did 1 have too much blood sugar? I have two charts posted on the walls, both at work and home. They say if you have these symptoms, it is low blood sugar. If you have these symptoms, you have high blood sugar. Strange thing: they often have the same symptoms ! Another thing I have learned about diabetes is that the more information you get, the better it is. I have been attending the Diabetes Management class held at the Peny Hospital. Dr. Sandra Brenner leads the program on the third Thursday of each month. I have gone to two classes. The classes not only offer information, but they have health screenings too. They take your blood pres sure. monitor your blood sugar, and ask you ques tions concerning your health during the month. Oh. yeah... they weigh you too. (1 have lost weight dur ing this past month.) The class stresses the importance of monitoring blood sugar levels, exer cise, and diet. Some mem bers of the class are on insulin, some are on pills, and a few are trying to con trol their diabetes by diet and exercise. I am in the last group: diet and exercise. Regardless, eating healthy and exercising is good. Brenner said most Americans eat through the Window of th<?ir cars. 1 admit I, too, use to eat that way. Let me say it has not been easy. My family loves candy, french fries, and such, and I am no exception. I know I can eat anything I want as long as I count the calories, the carbohydrates, the sug ars, the fats, etc... However, by the time 1 do that, I don’t want it any more. I do not believe I have ever eaten as healthy as I am doing right now. 1 have learned to love skim milk. I eat more vegetables and less meat. Does that mean I never want some thing else? No. I have to fight my cravings every day. I tell myself that noth ing I want to eat will taste as good as being healthy. Brenner also said that while too high blood sugar is not great, it is better to err on the side of too much blood sugar than not enough. I was stunned to learn that too low blood sugar can cause uncon sciousness and possible death. Whoa. Brenner said that when we feel faint, we should take have a small pack of M & M's or half a regular Coke. And, she stressed, if we are driving, we should pull over into a parking lot and stay there until the sugar level rises and we are stable. I realize that my learning everything I can about dia betes will help me now and in the future. I appreciate any tips or information on controlling by blood sugar. Like tips on easing the pain of sticking my fingers so many times a day? Tribble Continued from page 4A certain religious group came to town. Each person had a copy of the Ten Com mandments and a $lO bill. They left town without breaking either. From Where I Sit, the House legislation is a good bill and deserving of Senate approval. And yes, there will be folks out there ..look ing for loopholes" in an effort to side step the true intent of the legislation. According to Bennett, the Perry store has been designed according to Wal- Mart s latest prototype.
