The months of June and
July don't usually conjure
up the images of high
school basketball, but for
Coach Carl Thomas and the
Perry Panthers summer
time just means business
as usual.
Thomas took 14 future
Panthers to camps this
summer and is holding
open gym nearly every day.
"The kids come in." Thomas
said. “ and we just work on a
few things each day."

spent much of his vacation this summer
working out with the Panthers during
their summer practices.
The team traveled to
Armstrong Atlantic College
for three days of camp and
then on to Lander Universi

another three days of camp.
The future Panthers are
also participating in a sum

The teams compete just as
regulation high school bas

with high school officials
regulating the games and a
running clock.
The team has played a

prizes, mulligans and a
reception afterwards.
The number of teams will
be limited to the first 120

Thomas said the point of

“We lost four starters to
graduation. Many of our

new situations this fall. The

Muzzle loading deer hunting
comes to Georgia this fall
The Board of Natural
Resources recently adopted
changes in the hunting reg
ulations for the upcoming
1999-2000 season.
Changes include the first
primitive weapons season
for deer in Georgia.
If you have considered
buying a muzzle-loading
rifle, now’s the time.
I used a Thompson
Hawkeye Rifle for many
years, but now I use a CVA
50 caliber rifle. I bought it
last year, and broke it in by
taking two deer during the
Piedmont Refuge special
primitive weapons hunt last
fall.
Now you don’t have to
apply for a special hut as
we’ll have a statewide black
powder season. The
statewide archery season
will be Sept. 18-Oct. 15.
The primitive weapons
season will be Oct. 16-22.
Brannen claims
filth win of season
gggfth
July 17. Walt Brannen
traveled to Atlanta Motor
Speedway to race number
six of the summer Thunder
series. This race was help
prior to the Indy Racing
League Kobalt 500.
After drawing a seventh
place start for the heat
race Brannen worked the
traffic and finished first.
This win allowed him to
start on the pole for the
feature event.
On the start Brannen
held his line and started
pulling away from the field.
He led all 20 laps for his
fifth win of the season in
Atlanta.
July 20. Brannen was to
be in Charlotte for the
sixth race of the Summer
Shootout Series
Brannen is currently
first in points at Atlanta
and third in Charlotte.

“The number of hunters
in Georgia has been slowly,
but steadily decreasing,"
said WRD Game Manage
ment Chief TRod Holbrook.
"The WRD hopes the addi
tion of the primitive
weapons season will spark
a new interest in hunters as
many of them have been
requesting a black powder
hunt for 10 years."
During the 1997-98
hunting season, approxi
mately 85,703 hunters
bought an archery 7 license
in Georgia. During 1998 the
Georgia General Assembly
changed the archery license
to a primitive weapons
licens which now includes
both archery and muzzle
loading hunting privileges.
Based on hunter surveys,
the WRD expects to sell an
estimated 152,600 primi
tive weapon licenses this
year.
