Tedders shares tale
of mealworms
Br JOAN DORSETT
Home Jootwal Staft
Perry kiwanis Club mem
bers heard all about the
business of mealworms
from 30-year Perry resident
Louis Tedders at the July
22 meeting at New Perry
Hotel.
Tedders reminded mem
bers that he spoke to them
during 1990 about the
environment when he was
working as entomologist
with the U.S. Department
of Agriculture Research
Service at Byron from
1960-1995.
Introduced by member
Ches Cawthon, Tedders
has an undergraduate
degree in science from Mer
cer University and a mas
ters in entomology from
Clemson University. He and
his wife Iris married 43
years ago.
When Tedders retired
four years ago, he became a
consultant with Beneficial
Insectary in Oak Run, Calif.
The owner asked him to
look at a small insectary in
Tifton. Georgia Mealies.
He bought it in Septem
ber 1998 and moved it as
Southeast Insectaiy, Inc.
to 606 Ball St. Perry, as a
mail order business for
grub or larvae of darkling
beetles. Tedders son-in-law
Ken Simpson is manager
and is assisted by Sam
Wood of Byron.
They sell the mealworms
to fishing bait wholesale
distributors - Little’s Bait &
Tackle & Pawn, 523 Gener
al Courtney Hodges Blvd. is
a local source, 81.45 for a
cup. Tedders said there is
nothing slimy about these
worms absolutely clean
is the difference in these
and earthworms for fishing.
The National Bluebird
Society reports that bird
watchers in the United
States are very eager about
this product which is a
year-round business. Jane
Perfect and Tommy
Willard’s Birdwatchers
Supply in Macon sells the
mealworms.
Colleges and universities
use them for research
(Auburn University for bat
research), other insectaries
for raising food for various
beneficial insects, and pet
stores sell them for feeding
wild birds and pets like
lizards, monkeys, turtles

accommodations and a
good choice of restaurants.
The billboard will be
located north of the division
of 1-75 and 1-475 north of
Macon.
Andrew is also urging
local advertisers to put the
word "Perry" on their bill
boards instead of simply
using exit numbers.
This is an especially
and small mammals.
Southeast Insectary also
sells insect traps for pecan
weevils to most large grow
ers throughout the south
east.
The dull black male and
female adult beetles breed
and lay eggs in wheat bran.
Eggs hatch and become
grubs or larvae which is the
mealworm product Tedders
sells. The small, medium,
large and giant mealworms
eat wheat bran.
Nothing is wasted. The
excrement of the beetles
and larvae is a bone-dry
mealie manure that is good
3-3-2 fertilizer for African
violets, orchids, tomatoes
and ponds. A 50-pound bag
sells for $5.
At 606 Ball St., space is
the main concern and Ted
ders has spent the last six
months developing new
packing equipment. The
larvae are shipped in cloth
bags with newspaper or in
cups with bran to eat.
The business is begin
ning to recover from the
end of April when they
could not supply the
demand and had to turn
people away. It will be the
end of August before they
will be back up to peak
supply.
Beneficial Insectary in
California produces a para
site product better than
insecticides for controlling
house flies which is one pf
the major problems of poul
try and feed lot businesses.
Tedders continues to be a
consultant for Beneficial
Insectaries and can get
their products for cus
tomers here.
Plans for the future
include getting into the
beneficial nematode busi
ness which is used as an
insecticide on citrus trees
for certain insects that
attack the trees.
By end of summer lady
beetle traps will be market
ed for removing lady bugs
from houses. These lady
bugs that inhabit houses
are also a predator for con
trolling aphids on trees and
shrubbery, crape myrtles
and pecan trees. Tedders
said.
Also they are considering
producing butterflies that
can be released in celebra
tion as doves are at wed
dings and garden parties.
timely idea, because all of
Georgia’s interstate exits
will be renumbered begin
ning Jan. 1. 2000.
According to information
released by the Georgia
Department of Transporta
tion, and provided by the
CVB, signs will be upgrad
ed and the exit numbering
system will be changed to a
“mile log system" with exit
numbers corresponding to
mile posts.
1-75 numbering in Georgia
begins at the Florida state
line and runs north to the
Tennessee state line. It will
continue to run from south
to north, with the numbering
established by miles.
The new Perry inter
change (near the Georgia
National Fairgrounds) will
be Exit 134. The Marshal-
