It will enable Alltel to keep up with the growth in Houston County, a growth which has been rising four percent a year. Alltel has more than 90.000 lines in service in Houston County. "We are a strictly demand service. However, the demand here is such that this is one of Alltel’s top growing areas," said Dawkins. This rising growth rate is just one reason why Alltel is turning to optic fibers. “We just finished con struction of a • very large fiber optic network. Fiber optics are in a “ring. If a fiber optic gets cut, it would switch automatically to another fiber without a customer knowing it occurred, Dawkips said. However, Alltel would know and it would send out repair orders immediately. Network Operations are monitored in Ohio. It checks every switch 24 hours a day, every day. “If something goes wrong, we know,” said Dawkins. “Switches are mostly , large computers. Tira W. Green By CHARLOTTE PERKINS State Barbara Ann Robinson doesn’t remember when she first learned to cook, but she knows she was too little to reach a counter top. “When I was eight years old,” she said, “1 was stand ing up on a box, making bis cuits for daddy before he went to work at the cotton mill." Her sisters, Bobbie Her ring and Millie Cotton, knew about hard work at an early age, too, and all three of them were working as wait resses when they were still in their early teens. While they all headed off in different directions for quite a few years, the are back together now, working hard and laughing a lot as they make a rousing success of their homestyle restau rant, “My Sisters’ Cafe." It’s not fast food or trendy food. It’s good, old-fashioned Southern cooking served The phones in our home and businesses are basical ly computer keyboards.” He said Alltel is commit ted to getting dial tone ser vice installed within 24 hours of the order. “We strive to provide the best service we can. We cannot make everyone happy, but we try to resolve all problems as fast as we can. That is our guarantee. We want to provide the ser vices people want and the reliability of service they need," said Dawkins. Alltel offers local long distance, and Internet ser vice in the Perry area. After celebrat ing their second anniversary with things just getting “bet ter and better", the sisters want to thank the people of Perry for their support (and their appetites.) The name came from their brother, a barbecue special ist named Donald “A. 8." Herring, who wanted them all back together. As Millie puts it. “He loves family and likes to have us all in one place." Barbara Ann and Bobbie got the new restaurant start ed two years ago, and Millie moved from Florida to join them here in Perry after her husband passed away. The three sisters love their work and it shows. Barbara Ann is in charge of the kitchen. Millie’s the general manager having had many years of experi ence running a larger restaurant in Alabama and Bobbie is the hostess, cashier and even occasional- In addition, Alltel has an active marketing depart ment. It specializes in working with businesses to ensure their phone lines or computer lines are right for the business. “Our marketing depart ment has personnel whose total jo*b requirements are to work with businesses to make sure they understand their system,” said Dawkins. Though Alltel does not currently offer wireless ser vice in the Perry area, it is a major player in the wireless phone service industry. All tel does service more than 7 million customers in 24 states with both wireless and wired service. "We do not have a license to do wireless here," said Dawkins. Alltel does have a PSC license. It is wireless but a “different version of wire less." The PSC service is from Chattanooga, Tenn., to Tampa, Fla., without long distance charges. “It will happen here. It is just going to take time," said Dawkins. In addition to fiber optics, PSC service, and customer service, Alltel also, offers Alltel Information Services in 53 countries and territo ries. It builds networks and data bases for businesses, such as banks, loan compa nies, and credit unions, to communicate. Dawkins said, “Alltel is a very young, aggressive com pany. It knows where it wants to go.
