Obituaries Myrtle Roberson Buckner Myrtle Roberson Buckner, 89, of 1026 Keith Drive, died July 29, 1999 at the Perry Hospital. Services were held at Perry United Methodist Church on July 31, with burial in the Magnolia Park Cemetery in Warner Robins. The Rev. Bill Strickland and the Rev. Sheila Feight ner officiated. Mrs. Buckner was a former co owner of the Vanity Shop in Perry. She was a member of Perry United Methodist Church, the Susanna Wes ley Sunday School Class, the Ameri can Legion Auxiliary and the Perry Garden Club. She was the widow of the late F.E. Buckner and is survived by several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the Perry United Methodist Church, 1001 Carroll Street, Perry, Ga., 31069. Ellen Jr. John A. “Jack" Ellen Jr., 82, died July 29, 1999 at his home at 1425 Baker St. Memorial services were held at Perry Presbyterian Church on Aug. 1, with the Rev. Jim Shipley officiating. Mr. Ellen was a native of Pennsyl vania. A retired architect, he had Educators share updates with Chamber members By Torey Jolley Home Journal Staff Education was the topic for the Perry Chamber of Commerce Good Morning Perry Breakfast July 28. Addressing the various business and industry leaders were Charles Hol loway, Houston County School Superintendent; Billy Edenfield, President of Middle Georgia Technical Institute; and Michael Drake, Headmaster of Westfield Schools. “Next to religion, educa tion is the most important thing for our children," said Holloway. Holloway said more than 21,000 Houston county students will begin school Aug. 12. They will be in 33 different schools five new schools included. Holloway said after Robins Air Force Base, the Houston County Board of Education is the second largest employer in the county. “Of our $l2O million budget, S7O million is used to support employees," said Holloway. Holloway invited the Chamber members to visit the Perry Primary School. Stating the school is an educator’s wish. “Having all the Pre-K, Kindergarten, and First grades in one facility is a plus," said Holloway. Ellen 111, of North Quincy, Mass.; two daughters, Lynn Barrett of Kennesaw and Christine Smith of Bluffton; a stepson, C. Robert Con nors of Golden Dale, Wash.; and three grandchildren. Abbott Vanburen Jones Abbott Vanburen Jones, 62. of 146 Misty Lane NE, Eatonton, Ga,, died Aug. 2, 1999 at his home. Funeral services will be held at Lakeside Baptist Church in Eatonton at 11 a.m., Aug. 4. Burial will be in the Perry Memorial Gardens. Tech MGTI head Edenfield told the Chamber members MGTI is now offering more classes, including a truck driving program and a soon to start program of Dental Hygiene. Edenfield said one of the greatest things to happen for education was the Hope Grant. "It is the best kept secret in Georgia." said Edenfield. Students are able to attend MGTI with the help of the HOPE Grant. Stu dents do not need a B aver age to attend MGTI, but must pass an entrance exam. ‘The average age of our students is 28 years old. MGTI offers Associate degrees in sever al programs. “Many people work in Macon or Bibb county, but they physically live here in Houston County because of the school system," said Westfield Schools Head master Drake. Drake said Westfield Schools will be filled with 600 students in grades K through 12. “We’ve had a big growth in our 4-5 year olds,” said Drake. He attributed that to the opening of an after school program. The program is state licensed and is open year round. Drake said Westfield Schools have students from eight counties and many new students from Taylor County this year. Drake said the improve ments Westfield has made include a new administra tion building, the new Pre K and K building, and ren ovations of the three com puter labs. The improvements will also include a new' field house for the sports department. Drake said the changes electronics supervisor from Robins Air Force Base. Lavon Rambo Wall Lavon Rambo Wall, 75, of Perry, formerly of Wilmington, Dela., died July 31, 1999 at her residence. Funeral services will be held at Fisher-Edgington Funeral Home in Wilmington on Aug. 4, with burial in the Maple Grove Cemetry, Port William. Mrs. Wall was a native of Ohio. She is survived by her husband, William Wall of Perry; a son, Franklin Wall of Tampa, Fla,; a sister, Marcella Kerns of Wilmington; and five nieces.
