Pathfinders Sunday School classmates and fellow workers and friends said gtxxibve to Jimmy Wilson Aug. 7 at Perry United Methodist Church. Following the music “Why Me?" bv Kris Kristofferson, his longtime friend Larry Walker gave a eulogy which included history of the Wilson family and Perry that brought comfort and fond memories to the family and friends. Said Walker: “I gave the eulogy at Bobby Branch’s funeral. Bobby weighed over 350 pounds. I said that Bobby was, literally and figuratively. A big man.' I spoke at Wilbur King's funeral. Wilbur was about 6 feet tail and weighed over 250 pounds. 1 called Wilbur A big man.' Jimmy Wilson was about 5 feet 6 inches tall or should 1 say 5 feet 6 inches short. But. he too, in the very best sense of the words was A big man.' "1 have known the Wilson family all of my life. Jerry, who is 2 years younger than Jimmy, and I went through 12 years of school together. Janice and I consider Faye and Jerry to be two of our very best friends. 1 visited in the Wilson home, often staying overnight. "Jerry. Bobby Jones, Jerry Horton and 1 worked during the summer of 1963 at Texas Steel Co. for Durward (Will) in Ft. Worth. Texas’. Ahrf and fhh „ ward served as our parents while we were in Texas. I spent the night with Bo and Sara Beth when they lived in Charleston, S.C., and they have spent the night in our home. I visited and laughed with Jack and Chris tine, when Jack ran the amuse ment park at I fouston Lake. "I learned from and loved Margaret. 1 knew the father, "Mr. Sam", who died shortly after Jimmy graduated from high school. And, of course, I knew the matriarch and the "glue” that held the Wilson crowd together Eunice a stronger and better woman never lived. And so, I believe I am qualified to talk about this wonderful family and this strong yet gentle man, Jimmy Wilson, whom we come to remember today. Thank you Wilson family for this privilege. - - ii . - , i . n CELEBRATING 95 Dollie Newberry. 95, with her family including (from left) Keith Newberry, Linda Newberry, Philip Newberry, Melissa Newberry, Pep Newber ry, Laura Newberry, Mildred Newberry, Large group gathers to celebrate Newberry s birthday Special to m Home Jourhai. Approximately 556 relatives and friends of Dollie Newberry attended her 95th birth day party Aug. 8 at Perry United Methodist Church fellowship hall. There were guests from Perry, Macon, Gray. As you have already surmised, there was a 'big crowd' for Mr. Sam and Eunice to clothe and feed. Mr. Sam worked at Penn-Dixie Cement, but everybody in the family participated in the distri bution of The Macon Telegraph The Macon News, The Atlanta Constitution, and The Atlanta JoumaL In fact. I believe that at least one or more of the Wilson boys or someone in the Wilson family “took the paper" for 38 consecutive years. “Jimmy, like the rest of the boys, had a paper route which he acquired at about 6 years of age both before and after school. Consequently. Jimmy, at an early- age, learned a lot about bicycles, dogs, and people thost- that would pay for their paper and those that would not. “Jimmy, like the rest of the Wilson boys, was a good athlete. Football Coach Herb St. John said of Jimmy: ‘He was fine, conscientious, dependable, and tough pound for pound, he was tough as anyone 1 ever coached.' "But Jimmy, like the others, was also smart. He was a good student and a hard worker. He also had nerves of steel as was evidenced by the fact that he eloped with Diana Venema when she was 17 years of age and still in high school. Jimmy and Dee went to Aiken, S.C. and married. "Jerry and Faye followed the elopement route to Aiken a few years later, being accompanied by Jimmy and Dee. On the return trip home, Jimmy sug gested that the first couple to have a male child should name him Aiken'. Jimmy and Dee won as is evidenced by their son. David Aiken Wilson. Obviously, all of this eloping must not have been a mistake, as Jimmy and Diana were mar ried 38 years, and Jeny and Faye have been married 34 years. But not only did Jimmy and Dee have a long marriage, it was one that was especially close. Both considered the other their best friend. Dee called Jimmy my buddy' and said that Jimmy raised her.' 1 think that he did. It was a marriage that produced two fine children. David and Elizabeth, and was what a marriage should be. “As a family, the Wilsons Ben Newberry, Dollie Newberry, Jackie Beeland, Jimmy Beeland, Glynelle Bee land, James Beeland, Martin Beeland, Dot Heard, Jacquelyn Owens The social hall was decorated with ferns, magnolia leaves, yellow lantana and numerous flower arrangements some of which were sent from friends. Deborah Walker provided a program of music at the piano. Mayor Jim Worrall presented a framed proclamation that declared Aug. 8, 1999 Dollie Newberry Day. Jackie Beeland was pleased to see her mother "so relaxed and happy and feeling wonderful during a most glorious occasion.’ Continued from page IB male; a medium, long haired white female and a small, black and white female puppy. They love each other and enjoy being in each other’s company. And let me tell you this, it is fun to be with them because they are all funny and they like to eat! They got their love for good food hon estly, as their mother was the best cook in Ferry. “After Mr. Sam died, Eunice ran a boarding house, and she always had plenty of good food to eat and plenty of people will ing to eat it! 1 can see Eunice and Christine waiting on the table the Wilson family and their friends and it was not unusual for there to be a choice of 3 or 4 meats, 6 or 8 vegeta bles. 2 or 3 breads, and 3 or 4 desserts! “Jimmy graduated from Perry High School and joined the Army. He was a paratroop er. 101st Airborne, and no sol dier ever kept himself in better physical condition. Later he graduated from Georgia State University and worked for Sears for 30 years before retiring and returning to Perry. “He became employed with the Georgia Department of Cor rections and was to be the War den of the new detention center in Perry, which is scheduled to open in the fall. Just as he had done in football, in school, the Army, and with his life, he was doing an outstanding job. “Jimmy was president of the Pathfinders Sunday School class here at the Perry United Methodist Church. He had been the president for the past two or three years. Every Sunday, he started the class with some thing interesting he had read in the newspaper, gotten over the Internet, or a friend had given to him. It was always appropriate and thought-provoking. “Last Sunday, he talked about the killings in Atlanta and said something to the effect that we should be prepared, because we never know when we will go. While it is not for me to judge. I truly believe that Jimmy Wilson was prepared. “No one not the preacher nor anyone can explain to our satisfaction why Jimmy Wilson was taken from us like he was. But many, including me, can attest to his goodness, his gentleness, his appreciative nature, his good humor, and the fact that he was a big man.'"
