In the early 1980 s, Dr. A.G. Hen

needed to have a scholarship fund
to help young people who wanted to
continue their education.
Primarily through his efforts, an

Karl Lewis. Yates Green and Tom
W. Daniel were appointed as the
first scholarship committee. They
were given the task of setting the
guidelines and raising additional
funds and investing the funds.
They established guidelines that
all scholarships would be funded
from the income of the fund and
that the fund principal would not
be encroached upon. The core

In 1983, the first scholarship
offered was S6OO each for one year
to a graduating student from West
field Schools and a graduating stu
dent from Perry High School. It was
stipulated at that time that the
scholarship had to be used for
tuition.
The Board of Directors in the mid
1990 s determined that the scholar
ship funds would be governed by a
Board of Trustees rather than a
Kiwanis Club Scholarship Commit
tee. The Board of Trustees was
established along with the method
of nominating and electing those
Trustees.
In 1996 the Sally and J.O.
Jacobs Trust Fund was made avail
able to the Scholarship Committee
for t heir management and for use of
the income from the trust for schol
arship purposes. v •
The trust is not integrated into
the Perry' Kiwanis Club Scholarship
Funds and is kept separate for
accounting purposes; however, the
income is specifically designated to
be used for scholarships of the
Perry Kiwanis Club Scholarship
Fund. This trust fund has a bal
ance in the excess of $325,000.
When the HOPE scholarship
became a reality, the Perry Kiwanis
Club Scholarship Trustees changed
the rules in order to allow the
scholarship to be used for books,
housing and other needs. Everyone
qualifying for a Perry Kiwanis Club
Scholarship would also qualify for a
HOPE scholarship.
