Fire Continued from page 1A Commissioner Gail Robin son introduced a request for qualifications for “design-build" services. Similar to an invitation to bid. the request for qualifi cations seeks a contractor who will coordinate the design phase as well as construction. Robinson said the overall cost for the projects will be about $650,000, a cost which has been included in the county's FY2OOO bud get. According to the terms of the request, the projects are to be completed by June 30. 2000. The new fire station in Centerville will be jointly financed by the county gov ernment and the city of Centerville, and will be jointly titled when it is com pleted. The city of Center ville received a grant to pay Johnson Continued from page 4A al Newspaper Association has some statistics of interest to both readers and advertisers. The study found that 83 percent of community newspaper subscribers read almost all the materi al in each issue. It also showed that 64 percent of the community newspaper readers consid er the local newspaper their primary source for local news. The survey also found that 58 percent of commu nity newspaper readers depend on their local news paper as their primary source for advertising. Even with the internet and all the other sources of information, nothing has come along that can replace the community for information of local inter est. We would like to express our appreciation to every one who provides help to make the newspaper much more complete and inter esting. • •• Barger did an excellent job of presenting the case for both reading and adver tising in a local newspaper. It's a fact, newspapers are an important part of our lives. The Home Journal and the Home Journal Advertis er are chock full of news about this community every issue. I hope you’ll join us for both papers each week. The Advertiser is in your driveway every Tuesday. The Home Journal can be in your mailbox every Thursday if you subscribe, Have an idea or a sug gestion? Offer it to us. We can't always make the change you suggest, but we'll certainly take it and see what it could do for us. Even if you suggest we go back to third grade to learn how to spell. Lordy, Lordy! The site for the Hender son station has not yet been determined, accord ing to Robinson. The other stations will have new bays with over head doors in addition to other improvements designed for better protec tion of expensive fire vehi cles and equipment, she said. Parks puterized complaint by its visitors. My main goal is to get my park in the same category as grandson Dylan’s park. I spent hours working on my park. How does he do it? He is only five and has mas tered a game not for his age group. Maybe that is it. No one told Dillon he couldn’t do something yet. so he just accomplished it anyway. Casinos good intent of legislators is being grossly abused. In other words, the public: has been bitten by a dog legis lators did not think would bite. When the legislation was passed a decade ago. the intent was to allow casino gambling on tribal reserva tions already in existence. I don't think the law makers intended for the tribes to go to places like Haralson County or Han cock County in Georgia and gobble up hundreds of acres of land and bless it as an Indian reservation in order to build a casino. Surely that was not the intent. Hwy 41 N. You, and the other papers, have run essential ly the same article for all these months. Why? What little can be gleaned from these articles is that there is double taxa tion in some areas, the cities seem to agree upon that; the cities of Center ville and Perry seem to think that rather than lose state funding it is better to sign the agreement as it is now written and argue with the county later. That may be the best course of action, but I also get the sense from what has Maybe that is the secret to so many things. Not to be limited by preconceived ideas or other people’s expectations. To try many new things and. to remember, failure is but a step to success. Well, maybe I have spent one hour too many on the computer playing games. 1 am glad my provider's problem has been resolved after my park is perfect. Continued from page 4A There is a problem with the legislation in the first place, and that is the fact that a certain race of Amer ican citizens are given the right by our U.S. Congress to build gambling casinos, even if only on present reservations. But then, to allow this particular race, and this race only, to purchase additional “reservations’’ across this country on which to construct gam bling casinos, is a gross injustice to other Ameri ' cans and a direct slap in the face of local and state laws. Some might say that if our state can run a lottery been written that the coun ty isn’t particularly moti vated to hold these discus sions. On the other hand Mayor Walker feels that the issue needs to be settled and the only way to do that is to use the leverage of withholding his signature from the doc ument to force the county to hold serious discussions with the cities. Without knowing all the facts I find it hard to argue with his point of view. You, and the other area papers, have done nothing in furnishing facts of the dispute to clarify this issue with your readers. Specifically: What are the major points of contention Continued from page 4A then why can't the Indians run casinos? Folks, there is a big. big difference here. Even thought I was not one of them, the state lottery law was passed by a majority vote of our citi zens. Beyond that, the profits got to benefit all races, not just one. I am glad Gov. Roy Barnes strongly opposes this wild move by our American Indians. I trust his influence will lead toward our U.S. Congress' quickly correcting their “mistake."
