Perry Horseshoe Club picks up three world title placings By Torey Jolley Home JoumwAi. Staff Horseshoes arc sup posed to be lucky. But for the Pern' Horseshoe Pitch ing Club, skill is how ringers are made. The six year old club is happy to have three world champions in their league. During the 1999 World Horseshoe Pitching four nament in Greenville. Ohio. Howard Kuehn. Tom Carter, and Buddy Aver brought home trophies for their skill. Kuehn placed fourth in Visitin’ 912-931 2151. • •• It is a fact that pets art therapeutic for older people. Carter placed second and Ayer placed second in their respective categories. In addition to Kuehn, Carter, and Ayer, the club had other members place in the world tournament. Placing in their class were Jo Ann Kennedy, Jerome Kennedy, Doyle Johnson, and Rick Thompson. The club members travel to North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, and Las Vegas to pitch in various tournaments. Makes 2 3/4 cups 1 cup butter or oleo 4 garlic cloves, pressed 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 3 cups water 2 tablespoons chicken bouillon granules 1 teaspoon pepper Melt butter in a heavy saucepan over medium heat; add garlic, and saute 5 minutes or until butter begins to brown. Whisk in flour until smooth. Cook, whisking constantly, 1 minute. Stir in 3 cups water, chicken bouillon granules, and pepper; cook over medi um heat, whisking con stantly, until thickened and bubbly. Chill. Vegetables With Garlic Sauce: Cut 4 zucchini, 4 yellow squash, and 1 sweet onion into 1/2-inch-thick slices; cut 2 red bell peppers in half, and seed. Place veg etables in a grill basket. Grill, covered with lid, over medium-high heat (350 to 400 degrees) 4 to 5 minutes on each side or until crisp tender. Cut bell pepper into strips; toss half of vegeta bles with 3/4 cup Garlic Sauce. Chill remaining veg etables for Bow Tie Pasta With Vegetables and Chick en. Makes 6 servings. Bow Tie Pasta With Veg etables and Chicken: Coarsely chop reserved grilled vegetables and 2 grilled chicken breast halves. When she recently was on an errand to Eastman, the brakes on her car failed when she needed them most resulting in an acci dent with another auto. Her pet cocker spaniel was killed instantly and Su received head wounds. Coincidentally, the voice she heard ask “Is anyone in here?" was her electrical engineer son Jeremy who lives in Hawkinsville and works in Eastman. Kiwanis lodine Deficiency Disorder program serves millions worldwide By JOAN DORSETT Hom = JkMnUJWL i BTAFJ^ —— Members of Kiwanis International continue their battle to do away with iodine deficiency disorder, Joel Burns of Milledgeville to Peny Kiwanians Aug. 17. Burns, a member of the Milledgeville Kiwanis Club, said since 1994 when the worldwide service organiza tion made a pledge to defeat IDD, the organization has raised some S3B million out of the commitment of $75 million. In Georgia, Kiwanians have raised one million dol lars toward a goal of $2.5 million. Burns reported. Burns said some 20 mil lion requests for iodine have been made in India. Worldwide, there are a bil lion and a half people with Thompson opens eye clinic at new Perry Crossroads center Fkom Staff Reports Rhonda Thompson, doc tor of Optometry, has opened the Thompson Eye Clinic in the Wal-Mart Vision Center off St. Patrick's Drive. Thompson is a 1988 graduate of the Illinois Col lege of Optometry, and has held a Georgia optometry license since 1988. She has received post doctoral training in medical treatment and management of eye disease, and is a member of the Georgia Optometric Association. She was previously associ ated with Eyesight Associ ates in Perry. A member of the Perry Kiwanis Club, she lives here with her sons.
