Some SIO,OOO donated to the
American Cancer Society is coming to
Houston County.
Beth Jones, Director of Community
Education and Services for the Hous
ton Healthcare Complex, said, “The
American Cancer Society, Southeast
Division, has given Houston Health
care Complex, which includes Periy
Hospital and Houston Medical Center,
a grant for $10,000."
The grant is to support the efforts
of the Houston Healthcare Complex’s
Early Detection for Houston County
project. The money will be used for
the year beginning Sept. 1.
“We are very pleased with the Amer
ican Cancer Society’s grant. We asked
for SIO,OOO and we got $10,000," said
Jones.
“We have several goals set. Statis
tics show one in eight women will
have a bout with breast cancer. One
good thing about breast cancer, if
detected early, it can be cured,” Jones
said.
“We hope to use this grant money to
promote what women should be doing
to ensure good breast health," said
Jones.

According to the American Cancer
Society, 43,000 women will die from
breast cancer in the coming year.
“In Houston County, our death
rates for breast cancer are higher
than the state of Georgia’s and much,
much higher than the national aver
age. Houston County has a 29.7 per
cent, Georgia has a 27.9 percent and
the United States has 16.4 percent
rates," said Jones.
She said the reason for the increase
in Houston County is lack of aware
ness in breast health, including mam
mograms and self-monitoring.
“Our goal is to reach at least 6.000
women in Houston County through
education of breast health. We are try
ing to increase mammograms in
Houston County by at least 20 per
cent,” said Jones.
To do this, Jones said the Houston
Healthcare Complexes and the Ameri
can Cancer Society plan to identify
women who are unable to afford
mammograms.
“We plan to get them into programs
which offer low cost of free mammo
grams. One thing we hope to do is
educate senior citizen women on the
Medicare program. Medicare pays for
mammograms,” Jones said.
raise money, “ said Warner Robins
Junior Woman's Club president Alline
Kent. “We are proud of the aceom
plishments that organizations in our
community can make because of our
monetary donations."
Each year all proceeds raised by the
Tour of Homes are donated to local
charities in the Houston County area.
This year, for the first time, the
Warner Robins Junior Woman's Club
will be accepting applications from
non-profit organizations that are
interested in receiving proceeds from
the Tour.
