The JV Lady Panthers beat Worth Coun ty 13-11; Lanier County 6-1 and Turner County, their strongest competition all day, 5-3. “I am so proud of them." said head coach Christy Horstring after the tournament ended. They are really coming together as a team. Since these girls are mostly fresh man. it is exciting seeing what I have to look forward to in a few years on varsity," she said. Horstring said the JV had a “never quit attitude" during the tournament. “We were down twice and came back against both Worth and Turner County to win.” The Varsity finished third in the nine team tournament , concluding a very strong tirst week of play. The Lady Panthers opened their '99 sea son bv traveling to Washington County last week. Junior Sherry Nipper pitched for Perry and picked up the 17-7 win. Lindsey Brown went 4-4 with three doubles and a triple in the game. Courtney Harris went 3- 4 with two doubles and a single and Tonya Gilbert went 3-4 with 4 RBI. "I didn't know what to expect since Perry didn’t play them last year," said Horstring. “But it was a fairly easy game for us. We came out hitting the ball and picked out good pitches.” The Panthers traveled to Jones County Aug. 19 where they lost a non region game in a close 8-7 score. “Defensively we played well." Horstring explained. "People just should have provid ed hits and didn’t”. In the Turner County Tournament Aug. 21, Perry participated in five non-region games, starting the day with their first game against Lanier County and former Panther coach Brenda Allen. The Panthers won soundly 6-4, with Sherry Nipper again picking up the win. Kristin Stokes went 2-3; Sherry Nipper 2-4; Tiffany Harris 2-4; Courtney Harris 2-4; and catcher in the game, Miranda Garren went 2-2. Perry faced Dooly County next in the tournament and won that game 22-4. ‘That game really got us fired up,” said Horstring. "We knew going in that we should beat them. Our defensive looked real good against Dooly County. We you get ahead big you have a tendency to slack off, but we held to it.” The entire Perry team scored in the Dooly County game, with the majority of the team batting over .500. Courtney Har ris went 3-3 with two singles, one double and four RBI. Perry followed with Brooks County, the first team all day that had power hitters according to Coach. Brooks hit the ball hard and long, but Perry still pounded Brannen 13th in nationals Fkom Staff Reports Elko resident Walt fclran nen and Team 911 finished 13th in the third annual Legends Cars Sports Design Young Lions National Championship at the Texas Speedway Aug. 21. Brannen captured a sec ond place in his heat race to gain a sixth starting slot for the feature race. He got a good start, and worked uj) to fourth before a bump late in the reace caused Brannen to go sideways. Earlier in the week, at Charlotte Motor Speedway Aug. 19. Brannen got rammed from the rear and finished sixth in the quali fying heat. He got rammed again during the feature race and finished 20th. Brannen was as high as second in the Charlotte standings two weeks ago and finished the sason at seventh place out of 45 cars in the semi-pro class 10-race season. Nipper went 3-4: Coby Williard and Rachel Kinnas both went 2-4., as a team the Panthers went over .500 for the second time in the tournament. Perry' picked up their only loss against Worth County, 5-4 after extra innings. Horstring said the game “would have been a good one to sit down and watch. Both teams had good defense, we were pretty evenly matched.” In the eighth and last inning with the score tied, the Panthers, on defense, got into a bases loaded situation with only one out. According to Horstring it gave her team some valuable experience. “Bases loaded, one out is not something you can practice, you have to experience it in a game,” she said. The loss to Worth sent the Panthers to the losers' bracket where they faced Lanier County again winning in extra innings 10- 6. Lead off batter Tiffany Harris had a strong hitting game the entire tournament and went 4-5 in the second Lanier County game with two singles and two triples. Candice Herald, a freshman, went 4-5 with two singles and one double and Sarah Stuckey went 3-4 with a single and two doubles. Lindsey Brown, w'ho hit well against Washington County and Jones County went 4-4. Perry has two non-region opponents on tap this week. Macon County, and Ameri cus before traveling to Montezuma for the Macon County tournament. The Panthers finished first in the Macon County tourna ment last season. The following week will be a tough one when Perry faces three of their four subre gion opponents. The Panthers will play four nights in a row, taking on Washington County, Bleckley, and West Laurens. Non region opponent Jones County is also on tap for the week. “With our nonregion games next week. 1 will be playing around with my lineup. The girls know that I am still working with it and they are really working hard to earn their spots. Our best 10 will be on the field to get the job done,” Horsting said. After oply three weeks on the job and one week of play, Horstring seems pleased with the team's performance so far this season. “The girls are responding to my philoso phy and it is showing in our wins. One individual can't win a game,” she said. Perry's next home game will be at Rozier Park against Washington County Aug. 30 at 4:30 p.m. Thank You To the wonderful people of Perry Thank you! My wife, Sara, and 1 have now returned to San Anto nio from the funeral of our brother. Jimmy Wilson in Perry. Nothing we have ever experienced could com pare to the overwhelming response that was shown during this time of grief and there are no words that we know to express our humble appreciation for the many acts of sympathy and kindness that were shown to us and our family. We could never reach everyone who performed so admirably, but it seems necessary that we mention some who went far beyond the normal requirements at such a time. First, there was Larry Walker, who delivered the eulogy. None of us could have done it. and yet. he was able to do a great job. Next was Carol Horton, who spent many, many hours serving food and providing encouragement and sympathy where ever it was required. Also, there were many people that we did not know people from the Sunday school and the Methodist Church people from far away places such as Miami. San Francisco. Westmoreland. Tenn., and relatives and friends from all of Georgia. Texas. Michigan, Flori da, Montana. New Jersey and other places. To all of you, the only words we can say are "thank you."
