The 13-girl team has been making strides in preparation for their coming perfor mances with the help of their coach, Westfield alumna and Vespidaette Stephanie Davis. There the squad was instructed in new dance routines, skills, techniques, projection, and showmanship. During the camp, the Vespidaettes won blue ribbons and superior rat ings in four individual routines performed and excellent ratings on the home routine which was learned at Westfield the week prior to camp. In addition. Top Gun awards were earned by Lindsay Jones, and Katie Byrd. Georgia Ann Brooks, Katie Byrd. Anna Gray, Caroline Maddox and Lauren Sims received recognition in the Funk competition. Katie Byrd, Bethany Cassell and Lauren Sims earned Showmanship rib bons. These ribbons were awarded to individuals exemplifying presenta tion, excitement, and pro jection during evaluation. Spirit ribbons were awarded to individuals showing the most spirit and enthusiasm during class. Earning spirit rib bons were Amanda Coogle, Beth Ellis. Sum mer McWilliams, and Lau ren Mullins. Outstanding individu als who exemplified the best all-around dance performance, skills, lead ership ability and overall attitude at camp were nominated for the 10-per son All-American team. Out of the 60 camp par ticipants, Westfield Vespi daettes have two girls on the All-American team. Receiving this honor were Katie Byrd and Lindsay Jones. Upon returning to West field, these girls continued striving for excellence, but not only in dance. Each Vespidaette must main tain grades and excellent conduct throughout the entire year, not just lor the football and basket ball seasons. Why do the girls work so hard to achieve this goal? According to Vespidaette Captain Amanda Cooglc, “It is a lot of fun. I like performing in front of peo ple. I enjoy entertaining. But as a Vespidaette. I get to make many new friends. The work is hard, but making new friends is well worth it." For one Vespidaette, it is carrying on a family tradi tion. McWilliams is the granddaughter of Mr. And Mrs. Billy Beckham. Claire Beckham was the found ing director of the original Westfield Vespidaette Dance Team in 1979. Davis summoned it all up, "They are an out standing group of girls. You can tell how hard they work. It is a young team. Few had any prior dance experience, but they worked together to achieve success. It is the accom plishment of succeeding they want.” The 1999 Westfield BEST WISHES FOR A GREAT SEASON TO THE HORNETS AND THE PANTHERS!
