Sullivan Clerk, Superior Court, Houston County, Georgia 9-11 9/2-9/9 Local news in brief Perry United Methodist Church burglarized recently Staff, coifMUNiTY reports The Perry United Methodist Church was bur glarized sometime between Aug. 22. and Aug. 23, according to Lt. Heath Dykes of the Perry Police Department. Dykes said that a small safe was stolen from the church. He added that a door of the church was apparently left unlocked during the night. The incident is under investigation. 'Experiencing God’ course offered at Crossroads “Experiencing God" is a small group seminar course designed to help participants discover and experience their personal relationship with Jesus Christ. For 13 weeks, from the first of September through mid December, at 7 p.m. Wednesdays, participants interact with a self-paced workbook and attend week ly small group sharing times, with facilitator-led discussion. Houston Lake Country Club President Chris Mur man announced that the annual Club Championship has been renamed and is now called the Mell Tolle son Cup. The tournament will be conducted each summer in the honor and memory of the late Mell Tolleson who passed away on April 1 at the age of 63. Tolleson was one of the founders of Houston Lake Country Club in 1966 and won the inaugural Club Champi onship in 1967. Tolleson was a former Director of the Georgia State Golf Association and remained active in various golf activities and charities. “Mell was very special to me," said Mur man. “When we purchased the club from Mell and his partners in 1986, he was the one that sort of took me .under his wing and looked out for me. 1 was new to middle Georgia (coming from Florida) and he was always the person I would go to when I had dif ficult decisions to make. “There were many days he would stop by for a cup of coffee and I would know he had something on his mind. My role was to pay attention and learn. He was a very wise man. I remain grateful to him and his fam ily for all that they have done to support me.” Mur man said. The Mell Tolleson Cup was played in early August with over 70 members of Houston Lake Country Club competing for the cup. Stephen Welsh fired rounds of 70 and 75 for a one over par total of 145 and then went on to defeat Edward Strickland of Perry in a dramatic sudden death playoff. Strickland, the defending champion shot rounds of 73 and 72 to force the playoff with Welsh. Welsh's name is now added to the Mell Tolleson trophy which displays the 33 year history of the Club of Champions at Houston Lake. Tolleson’s widow Sandra and her son.
